Underfloor heating in Palma: three very different homes
Palma is not one place, it is several. Installing in a flat in Santa Catalina is nothing like doing it in a villa in Son Vida or in a stone house in the old quarter. These are the three situations we come across almost every time.
The town-centre flat or penthouse: it all comes down to headroom
It is the number one conversation in Palma. Underfloor heating raises the floor level, and in a flat with tight ceilings, doors already trimmed or a landing you have to meet flush, that is what decides it. For refurbishing an existing home there are low-profile systems designed for exactly this. We come, we measure with the door open and the window in front of us, and we tell you whether it fits — or whether something else suits you better. We would rather tell you it does not fit than leave you with a half-finished job.
The villa in Son Vida, La Bonanova or Génova
Here there is room and there is floor area, which is where underfloor heating shines: large houses over several floors, where radiators force you to run hot just so the heat reaches everywhere. With underfloor heating per floor and zoned room by room, each area runs at its own temperature and the heat pump works with low-temperature water, which is when it really uses little. For summer, fan coils fed by the same machine.
The townhouse in the old quarter
Four-metre ceilings, stone walls and cast-iron radiators heating the air up above while your feet stay cold. Underfloor heating works the other way round: it heats from below with low-temperature water and uses the building's thermal inertia instead of fighting it. Houses like these are where the difference shows most, both in comfort and on the bill.
What nobody tells you
In Palma the problem is not the floor: it is where the machine goes
The floor circuit is inside your own home and does not touch communal elements. What has to be settled first is where the heat pump's outdoor unit goes: façade, light well, terrace or roof. In a Palma building that goes through the residents' association, and sometimes through the local rules if you are in the old quarter.
We look at it on the first visit and tell you what your options are and which one tends to be accepted, so you arrive at the association with a concrete proposal rather than a question. It is what delays this kind of job most when it is not anticipated.

FAQ about underfloor heating in Palma
I live in a flat in Palma, will underfloor heating fit?
Nearly always yes, but the headroom has to be checked. Underfloor heating raises the floor level, and in a town-centre flat with tight ceilings or doors already trimmed, that matters. There are low-profile systems designed precisely for refurbishing an existing home. We come out, measure what is there and tell you whether it fits or whether another solution suits you better.
Can it be fitted without lifting the whole floor?
In a refurbishment where you are already changing the flooring, it is the perfect moment and adds no extra building work. If the current floor is staying, it still has to come up to run the circuit: there is no way to install underfloor heating without getting to the floor. That is why it makes sense to plan it when a refurbishment is already on the table.
And cooling in summer? Palma gets hot
Underfloor cooling does little and has to be handled carefully, because dropping the water temperature too far causes condensation. What we do is leave the floor for winter and fit fan coils for summer, fed by the same heat pump. One machine for both jobs.
I live in an old-quarter house, does it work with high ceilings?
It works especially well. In Palma's townhouses, with high ceilings and a lot of mass, radiators heat the air up above while your feet stay cold. Underfloor heating works the other way round: it heats from below, with low water temperatures, and uses the building's thermal inertia instead of fighting it.
Do I need the residents' association's permission?
Underfloor heating is inside your own home, so in itself it does not touch communal elements. What does need checking is the heat pump's outdoor unit, because it goes on the façade, the light well or the roof. We tell you what the options are before you take it to the association, and what tends to be accepted in Palma's buildings.

Do you repair underfloor heating that is already installed?
Yes. The usual jobs are bleeding the circuit, balancing the manifolds because some rooms heat and others do not, replacing seized thermal actuators or changing the controller.
