Water softeners in Mallorca
Savings, sodium, regulations and upkeep, in depth.
Water softeners · Porto Cristo
Porto Cristo's water comes from wells and arrives with a hardness of 57 °fH according to the latest SINAC bulletin; in Porto Cristo Novo it rises to 68 °fH. It is one of the hard networks of eastern Mallorca, and in a house that spends half the year shut, limescale works away unseen. A well-adjusted water softener holds it back; here are the numbers and how we fit it.

The official figure
SINAC lists three networks on this stretch of the Manacor coast, all three with well water: Porto Cristo; Playa Romántica and Porto Cristo Novo; and s'Illot and Cala Morlanda. None falls below 44 °fH:
| Supply network Places it serves | °fH | °dH | Hardness (mg/L CaCO₃) | Calcium (mg/L) | Magnesium (mg/L) | Bulletin date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porto Cristo | 57 | 32 | 568 | 130 | 59 | 1 June 2026 |
| Playa Romántica · Porto Cristo Novo s'Estany d'en Mas | 68 | 38 | 675 | 140 | 79 | 3 August 2026 |
| Cala Morlanda · s'Illot s'Illot, Cala Morlanda | 44 | 25 | 443 | 100 | 47 | 4 May 2026 |
Source: SINAC, Spanish Ministry of Health (sinac.sanidad.gob.es), latest bulletin for each network, checked on 1 October 2026; only networks with a 2025 or 2026 bulletin. Hardness calculated from the calcium and magnesium in the bulletin (CaCO₃ = 2.497 × Ca + 4.118 × Mg); 1 °fH = 10 mg/L CaCO₃, 1 °dH ≈ 17.8 mg/L. The rest of the island is in the Mallorca water table.
Porto Cristo gave 568 mg/L CaCO₃ in the bulletin of 1 June 2026, with 130 mg/L of calcium and 59 of magnesium. Porto Cristo Novo, 675 mg/L; s'Illot and Cala Morlanda, 443 mg/L. According to SINAC, the three networks share an operator and sources: 18 wells.
Where the saving is
At 57 °fH, for every 100 m³ of water about 57 kg of limescale (as calcium carbonate) comes into the house. It ends up on the water heater element, the cylinder coil, in the washing machine and in the shower heads. In holiday homes something else happens: when the house is shut in September, the water left in taps and toilet cisterns leaves its limescale dry, and by June some taps no longer open properly.
As a reference, Daikin sets in the manual of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump a maximum of 3 mmol/L (30 °fH) without treatment: Porto Cristo is almost double. And Battelle measured for the industry that a gas water heater falls from 80 % to 72 % efficiency in two years on water of about 44 °fH. If your house has a heat pump or solar panels with a storage cylinder, the cylinder is the first thing to protect.
Setting and drinking water
A softener swaps limescale for sodium: it adds about 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH of limescale it removes. With water that starts out this hard there is a lot to remove, so the answer is not to push it: the outlet blend is adjusted, without going below the 55 mg/L of hardness RD 3/2023 requires, and left measured. In Porto Cristo the starting point is 57 °fH and in Porto Cristo Novo 68: the same unit, with a different setting.
And drinking water, separately: the kitchen tap left unsoftened or reverse osmosis under the sink. The one we recommend is the Kinetico RO Premier.
Sizing and installation
The size doesn't come from a table: it comes from the hardness measured at your meter, the water the household uses and the flow that showers and taps call for at the same time. The installation is governed by the CTE DB HS 4 building code (non-return valve, bypass, test point and meter): the detail is on water softeners in Mallorca. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico (Premier Plus and Premier Compact), which according to the manufacturer works without electricity and regenerates according to the water used.
The case of Porto Cristo
Many a Porto Cristo house is the summer home of a family from Manacor, and many a villa in Porto Cristo Novo belongs to owners who live abroad. In both cases the softener spends months idle. Before the water is used again it is started up as the manufacturer's manual sets out and the salt is checked; with JSL Villa Care we do it before you arrive.
In villas with a garden and pool we separate irrigation and pool filling, which don't need softened water. And if you run a hotel or holiday apartments, see what RD 487/2022 asks of the hot water on Legionella in Mallorca: limescale counts there too.
How we work
Photos of the water inlet, of where the unit would go, and how many people live in the house.
Your water's hardness, the pressure and the drain. That decides the size.
Non-return valve, bypass, meter and blend setting, measured at the outlet.
Salt, sanitising and servicing at the interval your unit's manufacturer requires.

Common questions
According to the latest bulletin reported to SINAC (Spanish Ministry of Health), dated 1 June 2026: 568 mg/L CaCO₃, which is 57 °fH or 32 °dH, with 130 mg/L of calcium and 59 of magnesium. Playa Romántica and Porto Cristo Novo gave 68 °fH on 3 August 2026, and s'Illot and Cala Morlanda 44 °fH on 4 May 2026. All three networks are supplied from wells.
Yes, if you want the water heater and taps to last. At 57 °fH, the water is almost double the 30 °fH that Daikin allows untreated in the manual of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump, and every 100 m³ brings about 57 kg of limescale. In a house that is shut in winter you have to allow for the start-up each season: salt, whatever the manual sets out and outlet hardness.
For drinking, better from another tap. A softener swaps limescale for sodium, about 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH it removes, which is why it is set without going down to zero: RD 3/2023 requires softened water to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness. In Porto Cristo we leave the kitchen tap off the unit or fit reverse osmosis; we recommend the Kinetico RO Premier.
The approach is the same, with a unit adjusted for more limescale: 68 °fH (675 mg/L CaCO₃) in the bulletin of 3 August 2026, according to SINAC. The capacity is worked out from the hardness measured at your house and the water it uses, and in a villa with a garden, irrigation and the pool are left off the softener. It is set without going below 55 mg/L of hardness, as RD 3/2023 requires.
The same as anywhere in Mallorca: it goes after the main stopcock, so the CTE DB HS 4 building code applies, as article 46 of RD 3/2023 states. A non-return valve before the unit, a bypass so the house is not left without water, a point for checking the treatment and a meter. The unit comes with its own product standard, EN 14743. In the old houses by the harbour, what is usually missing is a drain near the inlet.
