Source: SINAC, Spanish Ministry of Health (sinac.sanidad.gob.es), latest bulletin for each network, checked on 1 October 2026; only networks with a 2025 or 2026 bulletin. Hardness calculated from the calcium and magnesium in the bulletin (CaCO₃ = 2.497 × Ca + 4.118 × Mg); 1 °fH = 10 mg/L CaCO₃, 1 °dH ≈ 17.8 mg/L. The rest of the island is in the Mallorca water table.

The network for Cala Millor and Cala Bona gave 539 mg/L CaCO₃ on 20 July 2026. Port Verd (58 °fH) and Na Penyal (62 °fH) are higher still; the village of Son Servera (41 °fH) and sa Coma (44 °fH), somewhat lower. As installers, from about 15 °fH we already see scale in water heaters and taps, and Daikin asks for the water of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump to be treated from 30 °fH, and here no network falls below 37.

Where the saving is

What it means in a house or an apartment block

At 54 °fH, every 100 m³ of water carries about 54 kg of limescale (expressed as calcium carbonate). In an apartment it goes to the water heater; in a house, to the boiler or the heat-pump cylinder; in a block with central hot water, to the storage cylinder and the return circuit, which is where it is hardest to remove afterwards.

Two references: Daikin, in the manual of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump, asks for the water to be treated when it exceeds 3 mmol/L (30 °fH), and here every network is over that. And Battelle, in a test for the industry, measured over two years a drop from 80 % to 72 % in the efficiency of a gas water heater on water of about 44 °fH. With a heat pump, the water is treated before the machine is first used.

Setting and drinking water

What it is set to and which water you drink

RD 3/2023 requires softened water to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness, and there is another reason not to go down to zero: a softener adds about 46 mg/L of sodium for every 10 °fH it removes. That is why the blend is adjusted and measured at the outlet, and softened water is kept for the installation. Since the starting hardness around the bay ranges from 37 to 62 °fH depending on the network, the setting is made with each house's own water.

For drinking and cooking: a kitchen tap that bypasses the unit or reverse osmosis under the sink. We recommend the Kinetico RO Premier.

Sizing and installation

How it is sized and how it is fitted

The size doesn't come from a table: it comes from the hardness measured at your meter, the water the household uses and the flow that showers and taps call for at the same time. The installation is governed by the CTE DB HS 4 building code (non-return valve, bypass, test point and meter): the detail is on water softeners in Mallorca. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico (Premier Plus and Premier Compact), which according to the manufacturer works without electricity and regenerates according to the water used.

The case of Cala Millor and Son Servera

Hotels that close in winter and year-round homes

Cala Millor lives off the season: many hotels and apartment blocks close in winter and open in spring. For them limescale is also a Legionella matter: RD 487/2022 asks for a softener or a scale inhibitor to be assessed on the incoming water, and for the installation to be cleaned and disinfected before reopening after a shutdown of more than a month. We take care of the installation; the plan is the owner's responsibility and is run by their technical manager, in-house or contracted, and the Legionella culture is done by an accredited laboratory.

In Costa de los Pinos, Port Verd or Son Servera itself there are many homes whose owners spend part of the year away. A unit that has stood idle for months is started up as its manual says before the water is used again; we handle it through JSL Villa Care, with the salt and outlet hardness noted down.

Common questions

FAQ about water softeners in Cala Millor and Son Servera

How hard is the water in Cala Millor?

According to the latest bulletin reported to SINAC (Spanish Ministry of Health), dated 20 July 2026, the network for Cala Millor and Cala Bona has 539 mg/L CaCO₃: 54 °fH or 30 °dH. The village of Son Servera gave 41 °fH on 29 June 2026, Port Verd 58 °fH and Costa de los Pinos 46 °fH. In sa Coma and s'Illot, already in Sant Llorenç, 44 °fH.

Does a hotel in Cala Millor have to treat limescale?

It has to assess it: the Legionella regulation RD 487/2022 (annex III) says that, where applicable, the need for softeners or scale inhibitors on the incoming water is to be assessed. With 54 °fH on the Cala Millor network, limescale builds up in storage cylinders and return pipes, and scale encourages the bacteria. We install and maintain the unit; the prevention plan is the owner's responsibility and is run by their technical manager, in-house or contracted.

Can you drink softened water in Cala Millor?

For drinking and cooking, better a separate tap. A softener adds about 46 mg/L of sodium for every 10 °fH of limescale it removes: that is the chemistry of ion exchange. That is why the blend is adjusted without going down to zero (RD 3/2023 requires softened water to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness) and, in Cala Millor, the kitchen tap is left off the unit or reverse osmosis is fitted; we recommend the Kinetico RO Premier.

I live abroad and have a house in Costa de los Pinos. Who looks after the softener?

We can. With 46 °fH on the Costa de los Pinos network (bulletin of 9 December 2025), a unit that runs out of salt lets all the limescale through to the water heater and the taps. We call in, load proper softener salt, measure the outlet hardness and start it up before you arrive, at the interval the manufacturer's manual requires.

Does the same softener work for Son Servera as for Cala Millor?

The type of unit, yes; the setting, no. Son Servera village has 41 °fH and Cala Millor 54, and Na Penyal reaches 62, according to SINAC. The capacity is worked out from the hardness measured at your house and the water you use, not from a table. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico, which regenerates according to the water consumed.
