Water softener in Marratxí:
in each neighbourhood, a different water.

In Marratxí the water changes from one neighbourhood to the next. The latest SINAC bulletins range from 36 °fH to 60 °fH depending on the network, and all of them are above 30. In a municipality of terraced and detached houses, where heat pumps are more and more common, that limescale goes straight to the hot-water cylinder. Here is the figure for your network and how we leave a water softener fitted.

Source: SINAC, Spanish Ministry of Health (sinac.sanidad.gob.es), latest bulletin for each network, checked on 1 October 2026; only networks with a 2025 or 2026 bulletin. Hardness calculated from the calcium and magnesium in the bulletin (CaCO₃ = 2.497 × Ca + 4.118 × Mg); 1 °fH = 10 mg/L CaCO₃, 1 °dH ≈ 17.8 mg/L. The rest of the island is in the Mallorca water table.

According to SINAC, all this water is groundwater: it comes from wells and, in a good many of the networks, from springs too. None of the 15 falls below 36 °fH. Networks above 50 °fH in the latest bulletin: 3. As installers, from about 15 °fH we already see scale in water heaters and taps, and Daikin asks for the water of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump to be treated from 30 °fH.

Where the saving is

What it means in a house with a heat pump

At 48 °fH (sa Cabaneta and Pòrtol, bulletin of 28 July 2026), every 100 m³ of water brings about 48 kg of limescale, expressed as calcium carbonate. In a house with a heat pump, the part that comes out of solution stays on the coil of the hot-water cylinder, exactly where the machine has to hand over its heat: the thicker the layer, the more hours the compressor works for the same result.

Daikin puts it in writing in the manual of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump: above 3 mmol/L of hardness (30 °fH) the water has to be softened or its hardness stabilised. Marratxí's 15 networks are above that. And the Battelle test for the industry measured, in a gas water heater, a drop from 80 % to 72 % efficiency in two years on water of about 44 °fH. If you are going to fit a heat pump, the softener is decided in the same project.

Setting and drinking water

What the water is set to in Marratxí

A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium: about 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH removed. The more limescale it takes out, the more sodium it leaves, and RD 3/2023 also asks for softened water to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness. That is why it is not left at zero: the blend is adjusted and measured at the outlet. In Marratxí that setting is not the same in every house: in sa Cabaneta and Pòrtol the starting point is 48 °fH, in Nova Cabana and sa Cabana 38 and in es Pont d'Inca Nou 56.

And for drinking and cooking, an unsoftened kitchen tap or reverse osmosis under the sink. The one we recommend is the Kinetico RO Premier.

Sizing and installation

How it is sized and how it is fitted

The size doesn't come from a table: it comes from the hardness measured at your meter, the water the household uses and the flow that showers and taps call for at the same time. The installation is governed by the CTE DB HS 4 building code (non-return valve, bypass, test point and meter): the detail is on water softeners in Mallorca. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico (Premier Plus and Premier Compact), which according to the manufacturer works without electricity and regenerates according to the water used.

The case of Marratxí

Terraced houses, houses with a pool and country houses

In a terraced house in es Pont d'Inca or sa Cabana the unit usually goes in the garage or the patio, next to the water inlet. In a detached house with a garden we first separate what doesn't need soft water: irrigation and pool filling are taken off before the softener, so as not to spend salt or regeneration water on the lawn.

In the country houses of the municipality that run on a well or a cistern, the order is different: first the lab analysis and then the unit, because a softener removes limescale and nothing else. It is on well and cistern water.

Common questions

FAQ about water softeners in Marratxí

How hard is the water in Marratxí?

It depends on the network. According to the latest bulletins reported to SINAC (Spanish Ministry of Health), checked on 1 October 2026, Marratxí's 15 networks range from 363 to 601 mg/L CaCO₃: from 36 to 60 °fH. Sa Cabaneta and Pòrtol gave 48 °fH on 28 July 2026; es Pont d'Inca Nou, 56 °fH on 20 May 2026; Nova Cabana and sa Cabana, 38 °fH on 22 April 2026. That is why we test the water at your house before choosing a unit.

Do I need a water softener if I have a heat pump in Marratxí?

It is always worth checking. The manual of the Daikin EKHHP hot-water heat pump asks for the water to be treated above 3 mmol/L of hardness, which is 30 °fH, and every network in Marratxí is over that figure in its latest bulletin (from 36 to 60 °fH). Limescale settles on the cylinder coil and the machine takes longer to heat the same water. Check what your own unit's manual asks for.

How much sodium does a softener add to the water?

About 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH of limescale it removes: that is the chemistry of ion exchange, the same in any unit. That is why the water is not left at zero (RD 3/2023 also asks for it to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness) and why it is set with the hardness measured at each house: in Marratxí that ranges from 36 to 60 °fH depending on the network. Softened water is used for the house and, for drinking and cooking, one tap is left untreated or reverse osmosis is fitted.

Do irrigation and the pool go through the softener?

They shouldn't. In a Marratxí house with a garden we take irrigation and pool filling off before the unit: neither the plants nor the pool need softened water, and every cubic metre that passes through the resin uses salt and regeneration water. The CTE DB HS 4 building code also requires a bypass and a meter on the unit, so the installation is already set up to separate uses.

Which brand of water softener do you fit in Marratxí?

We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico (Premier Plus or Premier Compact). The manufacturer explains on its website that it works without electricity, on water pressure, and that it regenerates according to the water used rather than on a timer. The size doesn't come from a catalogue: it comes from the hardness measured at your house (in Marratxí, between 36 and 60 °fH) and from the water you use.
