Air conditioning · Artà

Air conditioning in Artà,
without spoiling the façade.

In Artà the houses in the old town are stone with clean façades, and nobody wants a machine hanging over the front door. We install splits, multi-splits and ducted systems, looking first for where to hide the outdoor unit, in the town, in the Colònia de Sant Pere and in Betlem. We're Joaquín and Juan, a RITE-registered installer certified for F-gases.

Your area

Two climates in one municipality

The town is inland, high up and sheltered; the Colònia and Betlem, on the other side of the mountains, right by the sea. The air conditioning is chosen differently in each.

Artà's old town: the outdoor unit, in the patio or on the roof

A town house with stone walls warms up slowly and cools down slowly: less capacity than it seems, well distributed, is usually enough. The outdoor unit goes in the patio or on the roof. If the house is within the protected surroundings of Sant Salvador, which is a Bien de Interés Cultural, putting it on show needs the authorisation of the Heritage authorities (Balearic Heritage Act 12/1998, art. 37).

It works in winter too

Inland, winter nights are colder than on the coast, and a split is a heat pump: it heats using far less than an electric radiator or a butane heater. For anyone who lives in Artà all year, its heating figure matters as much as its cooling one.

The Colònia de Sant Pere and Betlem: sea and a shut-up house

By the sea, humidity and salt rule, and many houses spend months shut. A unit with Wi-Fi can be put in dehumidifying mode before you arrive, and the outdoor unit goes sheltered from the north wind, with the coil treated against corrosion if the manufacturer offers it.

In numbers

Heating, cooling and consumption, with data

The nearest AEMET series with published normals, Palma airport (1981-2010), gives an average January low of 3.8 °C and humidity of 62-65 % in July and August. A unit such as the General ASEH09KJCAL, for example, declares heating down to −20 °C and a SEER of 9.2 in cooling: more than enough margin for Artà's climate in both seasons.

According to IDAE, Spain's energy agency, each degree you don't ask of the machine saves around 7 %: 26 °C in summer and 21 °C in winter. In a thick-walled house it's better to keep a steady temperature than to heat or cool in bursts, because stone is slow to change.

Rules and grants

Price, rules and grants

The price of an installed split depends on capacity, pipe length, access to the outdoor unit, electrical work and brand: we give you a fixed price from your photos and details. In a town house, running the pipe to the patio or the roof is what varies most from one to another.

Capacity is calculated from the thermal loads of each room, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1). An air-to-air unit in a home is not covered by FACTOR 2026 (BOIB no. 83 of 2-7-2026); for heating and hot water with a grant, see heat pumps in Artà.

Servicing: whatever the RITE sets (IT.3, table 3.1) or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's. Only personnel certified for fluorinated gases work on the refrigerant circuit (RD 115/2017, art. 3).

How we work

How we do it in Artà, in 3 steps

1

Where to hide the outdoor unit

Send us photos of the rooms and of the patio, roof or terrace. We start with the spot for the outdoor unit and the pipe run.

2

Room-by-room sizing

Summer and winter thermal loads, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), taking the stone walls and the orientation into account.

3

A clean installation

Pipework where it shows least, circuit leak-tested and vacuumed, and a drain with a fall, checked.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in Artà

Can I put the outdoor unit on the façade of my house in Artà's old town?

Better not, and sometimes it isn't allowed. If your house in Artà is within the protected surroundings of the Sant Salvador enclosure, which is a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spanish Heritage Act 16/1985, second additional provision), the Balearic Heritage Act 12/1998 (art. 37) requires authorisation from the Island Heritage Commission. The usual answer is to take it to the patio or the roof; we send you the datasheet with its dimensions.

How much does it cost to put a split in a house in Artà?

The price of an installed split in Artà depends on capacity, pipe length, access to the outdoor unit, electrical work and brand. In a town house the run to the patio or the roof weighs heavily. We reply within 24-48 hours on working days and, with photos and measurements, send you an itemised quote.

Does an air conditioner heat properly in winter in Artà?

Yes. It's an air-to-air heat pump: the average January low at Palma airport is 3.8 °C (AEMET, 1981-2010) and inland, as in Artà, nights are somewhat colder; a unit such as the General ASEH09KJCAL declares heating down to −20 °C. In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit defrosts for up to 15 minutes, according to its manufacturer: that's normal.

My house in the Colònia de Sant Pere is shut for half the year: which air conditioner should I fit?

An inverter unit with Wi-Fi and a dehumidifying mode. Summer air is humid: AEMET gives an average of 62-65 % in July and August for Palma airport (1981-2010); with Wi-Fi you switch on "Dry" before you arrive. The outdoor unit goes sheltered from the north wind, with a service before each season because of the salt.

How often should the air conditioning be serviced in Artà?

Whichever is stricter, the regulations or your unit's manual. The RITE (IT.3, table 3.1) requires for units of up to 12 kW a service every 4 years in homes and every 2 in other uses; Regulation (EU) 2024/573 (art. 5) adds the leak checks if the gas charge requires them. In Artà town that is enough; in the Colònia, with the salt, better before each summer.

Does a stone house in Artà need a lot of capacity?

It usually needs less than people think. The thick walls of a house in Artà hold the cool and dampen the day's heat, and that goes into the thermal-load calculation the RITE requires, room by room. An oversized unit starts and stops, uses more and dries the air less well. The RITE (IT 1.1.4.1.2) takes 23-25 °C and 45-60 % humidity as summer comfort.

Quality

We work with every brand

For example DAITSU, General, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu or Toshiba: we choose the model by its datasheet in cooling and heating, its noise and the space there is for the outdoor unit.
