What changes when you air-condition in Capdepera

The harbour and the cape
Around the harbour, salt gets into everything. The outdoor unit goes, if possible, under cover or on the façade that doesn't face the sea, and we check whether the manufacturer offers the coil with anti-corrosion treatment.
The village and the castle
The Castell de Capdepera is a Bien de Interés Cultural. Within its protected surroundings, an outdoor unit on the façade is works that need the authorisation of the Island Heritage Commission (Balearic Heritage Act 12/1998, art. 37): we look for a patio or a roof where it can't be seen.

My house in Font de sa Cala is shut all winter: which air conditioner suits me?
An inverter unit with Wi-Fi and a dehumidifying mode. In Font de sa Cala summer humidity averages around 62-65 % according to AEMET (Palma airport, 1981-2010), and more by the sea; with Wi-Fi you switch on "Dry" before you arrive and the house doesn't smell shut up. Capacity is calculated from the thermal loads of each room, as the RITE requires.
Does the salt air in Cala Ratjada damage the outdoor unit?
Over time, yes, it takes its toll: in Cala Ratjada salt settles on the coil fins and the fixings, and the unit uses more to deliver the same. The datasheet SEER (9.2 for a General ASEH09KJCAL, for example) is measured with a clean coil. That's why we look for a sheltered spot, check the anti-corrosion treatment the manufacturer offers and recommend cleaning more often.
I live near Capdepera castle: can I hang the outdoor unit on the façade?
It depends on whether the house is within the protected surroundings of the Castell de Capdepera, which is a Bien de Interés Cultural. If it is, the Balearic Heritage Act 12/1998 (art. 37) requires authorisation from the Island Heritage Commission before the licence. Does a split heat properly in winter in Capdepera?
Yes, it's an air-to-air heat pump. The average January low at Palma airport is 3.8 °C (AEMET 1981-2010), and in Capdepera the coast softens the cold; a unit such as the General ASEH09KJCAL declares heating down to −20 °C. In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit defrosts for up to 15 minutes, according to its manufacturer: that's normal.
How often should the air conditioning be serviced in Cala Ratjada?
Whichever is stricter, the regulations or your unit's manual. The RITE (IT.3, table 3.1) requires for an air conditioner up to 12 kW a service every 4 years in homes and every 2 in other uses; Regulation (EU) 2024/573 adds the leak checks if its gas charge requires them; and if the manufacturer asks for more, you do what it asks.
