For one or two rooms in Mallorca, a split or multi-split may avoid ductwork; for a complete home, a ducted system can distribute air through ceiling grilles. We compare heat load, 2.5-7 kW class options, noise, zoning and available space before specifying a system. There is no single figure that fits every home or every brand: we work out the output of each room with a heat-load calculation. Floor area, orientation, western sun, insulation, windows or a double-height ceiling all change the numbers, and from that we choose the unit in the brand's range that fits best. An oversized unit doesn't cool better: it just starts and stops more often.

According to IDAE, Spain's energy-saving agency, each degree of difference saves around 7% of climate-control energy. It recommends 26 °C or higher in summer and 21 °C in winter, dressed for the season; Spain's RITE takes 23-25 °C in summer and 21-23 °C in winter as indoor design conditions (IT 1.1.4.1.2). The famous 19/27 °C limits don't apply to your home: Royal Decree-Law 14/2022 (art. 29) imposed them only on administrative, commercial and public-assembly buildings and premises (cultural venues, entertainment, bars and restaurants, stations and airports), not on homes, and they stopped applying on 1 November 2023. In Mallorca, lowering awnings and shutters in the sunny hours, as IDAE also recommends, lets the unit work less.

Yes. It is an air-to-air heat pump: it takes heat from the outdoor air. In Palma the average January minimum is 3.8 °C (AEMET, airport, 1981-2010 series), and a unit such as the General ASEH09KJCAL declares heating operation down to −20 °C outdoors in its data sheet, so here it almost always works well away from its limit. The manufacturer warns that output drops the colder it is outside and that, in cold, humid weather, the outdoor unit runs defrost cycles of up to 15 minutes: that is normal, not a fault.

Consumption depends on output, setpoint, insulation and operating hours. As an example with an official data sheet, a 2.5 kW General split (ASEH09KJCAL) declares a SEER of 9.2 in cooling: under the standard seasonal calculation, 9.2 kWh of cooling for every kWh of electricity. It is a manufacturer figure, not a bill. Every degree of setpoint counts — IDAE puts it at 7% — and solar self-consumption can cover part of daytime use in Mallorca, but the electricity is not free and the covered share depends on PV production and demand.

Yes: when cooling, the coil condenses water vapour from the air and the water leaves through the drain; units also have a “Dry” mode that cools gently while dehumidifying. It is needed: in Palma the average relative humidity is 72% over the year and 62-65% in July and August (AEMET, airport, 1981-2010), while Spain's RITE takes 45-60% as the indoor design condition in summer. That is why in Mallorca cooling never goes through the floor, which would condense: it comes from the split, the ducts or fan coils, each with its condensate tray and drain.

Each unit declares its noise in the data sheet: the outdoor unit of the 2.5 kW General (AOEH09KJCA) gives 44 dB(A) sound pressure in heating, measured in an anechoic chamber, and the manufacturer itself warns that installed it may sound a little louder. That is why, when the site allows, we place it away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours'. In a flat the façade belongs to the community: Spain's Horizontal Property Act (art. 7.1) requires works not to alter the building's external configuration or appearance and to be notified beforehand to whoever represents the community; check the statutes and talk to the administrator before hanging the outdoor unit. Noise is regulated by the Balearic Law 1/2007 against noise pollution and your municipality's bylaw.

A wall split such as, for example, the General ASEH09KJCAL uses R32, which has a global warming potential (GWP) of 675 under Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2024/573. That regulation bans placing on the market, from 1 January 2025, single split systems with less than 3 kg of gas of GWP 750 or more, and from 1 January 2029 air-to-air splits up to 12 kW with gas of GWP 150 or more, unless required for safety (Annex IV, point 9). These are bans on selling new equipment: the unit you already have can keep running and be repaired, and Article 11 allows, under conditions, parts to be sold to repair it.

In Mallorca a split runs for many hours in summer. The air filters, every two weeks: that is the interval given, for example, in the manual of the General ASEH09KJCAL wall split, which also explains that built-up dust reduces efficiency, lowers the airflow and makes more noise. Take them out, vacuum them or wash them in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and dry them in the shade. The stricter of the regulations and your unit's manufacturer applies, and in Mallorca we also recommend one service a year, ideally before summer, while the Spanish RITE table 3.1 sets legal minimums by power and use: up to 12 kW, every 4 years in dwellings and every 2 in other uses; 12-70 kW, every 2 years in dwellings and annually otherwise; above 70 kW, monthly. Seafront salt exposure may justify shorter intervals. The rule we follow: the strictest interval wins among the RITE, the F-gas rules (Regulation (EU) 2024/573) when the refrigerant charge brings the unit under leak checks, and whatever the manufacturer of your specific unit requires in its manual.

Yes. A low charge is not corrected by simply topping up: Regulation (EU) 2024/573 requires precautions against emissions and repair without undue delay when an F-gas leak is found. We leak-test, identify the cause and quote before charging refrigerant, and we handle the circuit under our F-gas certification (Spanish Royal Decree 115/2017). Source: Regulation (EU) 2024/573.

The equipment and its installation carry a legal guarantee of 3 years under articles 115 quater and 120 of Spain's consumer protection law (TRLGDCU), plus whatever the brand's manufacturer gives. We hand everything over with an invoice and, where the installation requires it (from 5 kW of thermal output, RITE arts. 15.1 and 24), with the certificate registered on the Balearic Government's online portal. In Mallorca, the price of an installed split varies with output, pipe length, access, electrical work and brand. Multi-split and ducted systems depend on room count, zoning and building work. Yes. A Mallorca home can use a heat pump with hydronic underfloor heating, commonly around 35-40 °C flow temperature, for winter and fan coils for cooling. Whether that is preferable to direct-expansion air conditioning depends on insulation, floor build-up, humidity control, usage and budget; JSL calculates both options.
