Not every house needs the same thing. In Vilafranca de Bonany we fit a split in a bedroom, a multi-split for a whole floor or a ducted system during a renovation, and explain why one rather than another. We are Joaquín and Juan, RITE-licensed and F-gas certified, and we fit it ourselves.

Your village
The typical Vilafranca house has a ground floor and an upper floor, is terraced, and has a patio or a flat roof terrace at the back. Depending on how many rooms you want to air-condition and whether there are building works or not, the solution changes.
It is the simplest option: an indoor unit on the wall, an outdoor unit in the patio or on the flat roof terrace and a few metres of pipe. It suits the main bedroom or the living room. Each room is switched on and controlled separately, and if one unit fails, the others carry on.
When there is no room for several outdoor units, a single one feeds two, three or more indoor units. It takes up less space and is less visible; in exchange, they all depend on the same machine and the pipe runs are longer.
With a false ceiling in the corridor or the bathroom, a concealed unit distributes the air through grilles to every room. No appliance is visible. It needs building work, which is why it is decided when renovating, and it is worth zoning so as not to cool empty rooms.
In numbers
The price of an installed split depends on the output, the metres of pipe, the access, the electrical work and the brand. A multi-split or a ducted system depends on the number of rooms and is quoted item by item, once we have seen the house.
What it uses depends above all on three things: that the output is properly calculated (thermal loads, as the RITE requires in its IT 1.2.4.1.1), that the unit is an inverter and what temperature you set it to. IDAE recommends 26 °C in summer and reckons a saving of around 7 % for each degree.
In Vilafranca, the PVGIS monthly series (European Commission, 2005-2020 averages) gives July an average of 26.0 °C, compared with 26.5 °C in Palma. For most of the summer, an inverter unit turns its output down to what the room needs.

How we work
Send us photos of the rooms and of the spot for the outdoor unit, with approximate sizes. If we need to see it, we will come and look.
We calculate the thermal loads of each room, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), and send you an itemised quote.
We fit it ourselves: vacuum and leak test of the circuit, drain tested and the unit running, with the 3-year legal guarantee and the manufacturer warranty.
Common questions
We give you a fixed price from your photos and details: it depends on the output, the metres of pipe, access, the electrical work and the unit. A multi-split or a ducted system is quoted item by item, with photos and measurements of the house. We reply within 24-48 hours on working days and, if we need to see it, we'll tell you.
It depends on the space and the use. Several splits are independent: if one fails, the others carry on. A multi-split needs only one outdoor unit, which in a Vilafranca village house with a small patio can be decisive. In both cases the output for each room is calculated from the thermal loads, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1).
If you are going to have false ceilings, yes: a concealed unit distributes the air through grilles and no appliance is left on view. In a two-storey village house in Vilafranca it is worth zoning, with a damper and a thermostat per room, so as not to cool the ones not in use. Going by IDAE, each extra degree on the summer set temperature saves around 7 %.
In the PVGIS monthly series (European Commission, 2005-2020 averages), Vilafranca de Bonany averages 26.0 °C in July and 25.7 °C in August; Palma, 26.5 and 26.4 °C. For the afternoons of July and August you need the air conditioning; the rest of the time, shade, night-time ventilation and the unit at 26 °C.
The units we fit now use R32, with a global warming potential of 675 (annex I). EU Regulation 2024/573 limits the gases in units placed on the market (art. 11 and annex IV), but it does not require you to remove the one you already have; if it is very old and runs on R22, that gas can no longer be topped up (Regulation (EU) 2024/590, art. 4). Replacing it pays off when the repair is expensive or the consumption of an old, non-inverter unit weighs on the bill of your house in Mallorca.
