Air conditioning in Costitx, barely seen and heard even less

In a small, quiet village like Costitx, the first thing you ask of an air conditioner is that it shouldn't be heard. We fit splits, floor-standing units and ducted systems in stone houses and fincas, choosing the unit for its noise and its consumption. We are Joaquín and Juan, RITE-licensed and F-gas certified.

Your village

A quiet village calls for quiet machines

Costitx has few streets and little traffic. At night, with the windows open, the background noise is very low, and a badly chosen or badly placed outdoor unit is the only thing you hear.

Noise, on the unit's data sheet

Each manufacturer declares on the data sheet the sound pressure of the indoor unit and of the outdoor unit, in decibels. Between one model and another of the same output there can be clear differences. For a bedroom, you look at the indoor unit's level at its lowest speed; for the neighbours, the outdoor unit's.

Placement does the rest

The outdoor unit goes away from bedroom windows, on anti-vibration mounts and never squeezed into a corner that acts as a sound box. In a terraced house, the flat roof terrace is usually a better spot than the patio.

Stone houses with little clear wall space

If you don't want an appliance high up on an exposed stone wall, a floor-standing unit goes low down, like a radiator. The Daikin Perfera floor-standing unit is one example; we choose it according to the room and the noise each model declares.

Where the saving is in Costitx

In the PVGIS monthly series (European Commission, 2005-2020 averages), Costitx averages 26.4 °C in July and 26.1 °C in August. A stone house stays cool through a good part of the day if it is closed up at midday and opened at night; the air conditioning covers the afternoons when that isn't enough.

We fit inverter units: IDAE counts inverter units, which adjust their output, among those that save energy (Guía Práctica de la Energía). The output is calculated from the thermal loads, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), and IDAE advises against choosing units more powerful than needed.

IDAE recommends 26 °C in summer. Each degree below costs around 7 % more.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in Costitx

How noisy is air conditioning? My street in Costitx is very quiet

It depends on the model, and you can find out before buying it: the manufacturer declares the decibels of the indoor unit and of the outdoor unit on the data sheet. We choose units with low values, and place the outdoor unit away from the bedrooms and on anti-vibration mounts. The maximum levels that may reach the neighbour's house come from the municipal noise bylaw and from the values to which the Balearic Noise Act 1/2007 refers (art. 16 and fourth transitional provision).

Where do I put the outdoor unit in a terraced house?

Normally on the flat roof terrace: it has good airflow, is away from the windows and can't be seen from the street. The inner patio is the second option, provided it is not so small that the hot air recirculates. The façade is the last resort, and always within the noise limits (municipal bylaw and Balearic Noise Act 1/2007). If the house in Costitx is listed, we first ask the council which procedure applies and whether it requires the machine not to be visible.

What is a floor-standing unit and when is it a good choice?

It is an air conditioning unit that goes on the lower part of the wall, like a radiator, instead of high up. It is a good choice when there is no clear wall space high up, in attics, or when you don't want an appliance on an exposed stone wall, as in many houses in Costitx. For example, the Daikin Perfera floor-standing unit. In winter, the warm air comes out at foot level.

Does a stone house stay cool enough without air conditioning?

On many days, yes, but not all. Thick walls delay the heat coming in; even so, the PVGIS monthly series (European Commission, 2005-2020 averages) gives Costitx a July average of 26.4 °C. For those afternoons a small unit is enough, calculated from the thermal loads the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), in the rooms used most.

Do the gas regulations oblige me to replace an old air conditioner?

No. EU Regulation 2024/573 limits the gases in units placed on the market (art. 11 and annex IV), but it does not require you to remove the one you already have; if it is very old and runs on R22, that gas can no longer be topped up (Regulation (EU) 2024/590, art. 4). The units we fit now use R32, with a global warming potential of 675 (annex I). In a house in Mallorca, replacing it pays off when the old unit is not an inverter, is noisy or the repair isn't worth it.
