Air conditioning in Santa Maria,
without spoiling the village house.

We're Joaquín and Juan. In Santa Maria del Camí we mostly work on village houses with stone walls and exposed beams, and on fincas in the Raiguer, at the foot of the mountains. Here cooling isn't the hard part: it's running pipes and placing units without hiding what makes the house beautiful. Registered RITE installer, certified for fluorinated gases. No subcontractors.

Your area

Santa Maria: stone, beams and little room for pipes

Santa Maria lies in the Raiguer, far from the sea. AEMET has no climate normal in the village; the nearest inland one is Palma airport (1981-2010): the average December minimum is 5.4 °C, January's 3.8 °C, and there are 15 frost days a year. Here air conditioning is asked for in summer and appreciated in winter.

Thick walls and exposed beams

A half-metre stone wall is slow to warm up and slow to cool down: the house copes well with the first hot days. Ducts need a false ceiling that would hide the beams, so in a village house we usually go for wall splits or floor consoles, with the pipes running through the patio, a cupboard or a corner that's already there.

The outdoor unit in the patio or yard

The street facade stays as it is: the outdoor unit goes in the back patio, the yard or on the roof. Between village patios sound bounces around, so we keep it away from the neighbours' windows and mount it on anti-vibration feet.

Fincas and country houses

On a finca distances grow: the outdoor unit can go far away, in a tool shed or behind a wall, always within the pipe length and height difference in the manufacturer's manual. And if the house has panels, it's worth linking it with solar panels in Santa Maria.

Figures and regulations

Cooling, heating and paperwork in a Santa Maria house

The same split heats in winter

With a heat pump, the split heats in winter. A model such as the General ASEH09KJCAL, for example, states heating operation down to −20 °C outside. IDAE recommends 21 °C in winter and 26 °C or more in summer, and puts the saving at about 7 % per degree.

Humidity in stone houses

Old stone houses hold moisture. In summer the air conditioning lowers it while cooling, and "Dry" mode removes it with hardly any cooling: the RITE takes 45-60 % relative humidity as the summer design value. The water leaves through the condensate drain, taken to a safe point.

Guarantee, certificate and refrigerant

3-year legal guarantee on the units (arts. 115 quater and 120 TRLGDCU), plus the manufacturer's, an invoice and, where the installation requires it, the certificate registered on the Balearic Government's e-office. We handle the refrigerant circuit under Royal Decree 115/2017 certification.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in Santa Maria del Camí

Can a Santa Maria village house get air conditioning without covering the beams?

Yes. Instead of ducts, which need a false ceiling, wall splits or floor consoles are used, and the pipes run through a patio, a cupboard or an existing passage. Each room's capacity is calculated from its heat loads, as the RITE requires; in Santa Maria, thick stone walls usually work in your favour.

Where does the outdoor unit go if my Santa Maria house faces the street?

There's almost always an alternative: the back patio, the yard or the roof. If the facade is the only option, the Santa Maria del Camí town hall is consulted first. The maximum distance between indoor and outdoor unit is set by the manufacturer's manual, and that's how we choose the spot.

Does a stone house in Santa Maria take longer to warm up in winter?

Yes: a thick wall has a lot of thermal inertia, slow to cool and slow to warm. With average December minimums of 5.4 °C and 15 frost days a year (AEMET, Palma airport, 1981-2010), what IDAE recommends is a 21 °C setting, enough for comfort, and turning the thermostat down to 15 °C if you're out for a few hours.

How much noise will the outdoor unit make in a patio between party walls?

As a data-sheet reference, a 2.5 kW outdoor unit such as the General AOEH09KJCA states 44 dB(A) in heating in an anechoic chamber; in an enclosed Santa Maria patio sound bounces and is more noticeable. So it goes on anti-vibration mounts and away from windows. The limit is set by the Balearic Act 1/2007 and the municipal by-law.

Which indoor unit suits an old house best: wall, console or ducted?

Wall-mounted, if there's a free stretch of wall above the doors; a console, if you'd rather have it low under a window; ducted, only if there's already a false ceiling or you want one. A 2.5 kW split such as the General ASEH09KJCAL modulates between 0.9 and 3.2 kW in cooling, enough for many rooms in a Mallorcan village house.

What guarantee and paperwork do you leave me with?

The 3-year legal guarantee of article 120 of the TRLGDCU, plus the manufacturer's; the invoice; and, where the installation requires it, the certificate registered with the Balearic Government. And a phone number: at the other end it's Joaquín or Juan, and we reply within 24-48 hours on working days.
