What each house needs in Bunyola
The municipality of Bunyola brings together two kinds of house that have little in common: the estate villa, with a false ceiling and a garden, and the village or mountain house, built of stone and with nowhere to run pipes.
Villas in Palmanyola
With a false ceiling in the hallway and bathrooms, one ducted unit distributes the air to the whole floor and in each room all you see is a flush linear grille. The outdoor unit goes in the garden or on the roof, away from the terrace and from the neighbour's boundary.
Stone houses in the village
In Bunyola village the houses step up the hillside and share walls. A split per room, with the outdoor unit on a terrace or in a courtyard and the pipe run indoors. Before hanging anything on a façade we check whether the house is listed.
Orient
At over 400 m, in Orient air conditioning is wanted almost as much for heating as for cooling. A split is a heat pump: it brings heat in minutes to a room the fireplace doesn't reach. As Orient is a historic site, the outdoor unit is placed where it can't be seen and the town hall is consulted first.

Where the saving is in a Bunyola house
We fit inverter units because the compressor adjusts its speed to what is needed instead of starting and stopping: start-ups are what use the most. With ducted systems we also zone: a damper and a thermostat per room, so as not to cool empty bedrooms by day or the living room at night.
The rest is the remote: 26 °C in summer and 21 °C in winter, the temperatures IDAE recommends, with around 7% of consumption for each degree of difference. We calculate the output from each room's thermal loads, as the RITE requires.

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in Bunyola
Ducted system or splits in a Palmanyola villa?
If there is a false ceiling in the hallway or the house is going to be renovated, ducted: a single unit, flush grilles and, with zoning, a thermostat per room. If not, splits or a multi-split. We decide after calculating each room's thermal loads, as the RITE requires, and seeing where the ducts can run. In Palmanyola we look at it villa by villa; in Bunyola village, house by house.
Does a duct grille show much on the ceiling?
Not much: a flush linear grille is a narrow slot in the ceiling or high on the wall, in the colour of the surface. The unit stays hidden in the false ceiling, with an access hatch for cleaning the filters and doing the maintenance the RITE requires. In a Palmanyola villa with a false ceiling in the hallway, that is what we propose.
Where do I put the outdoor unit in a house in Bunyola village?
On a terrace, in a courtyard or on the roof, not on the street façade. In sloping streets, the noise travels down towards the neighbour: it is placed away from their windows and on anti-vibration mounts, within the limits of the Balearic Noise Pollution Act 1/2007.
Can a split heat a house in Orient in winter?
Yes. Orient is above 250 m, in climate zone C3 of the Spanish Building Code, with more winter than Palma. A split is an air-to-air heat pump: as an example, the General ASEH09KJCAL declares heating operation down to −20 °C outdoors. In cold, damp weather it defrosts for a few minutes; that's normal.
How much do I save if I set the air conditioning to 26 °C instead of 24?
In the region of 14%: IDAE puts the consumption of each degree at around 7% and recommends 26 °C in summer. In a Palmanyola villa with zoned ducts, switching off the empty rooms adds to that.
How often is a ducted system serviced?
As often as the regulations set or, if the manufacturer asks for more, as often as the manufacturer says. The RITE (IT.3, table 3.1) sets as a minimum one service every 4 years in homes for units of up to 12 kW. The filters are cleaned several times a year and the condensate drain is checked before summer. In a villa in Palmanyola with a garden, pollen and dust clog the filters sooner.
