Air conditioning in Esporles: cooling, heating and less damp

What a house in Esporles needs
Esporles is a valley village, green and cool, with stone houses lined up along the torrent. Summer here is easier to bear than on the plain, but winter is damp and short of sun.
One unit for the whole year
An inverter split is a heat pump: it heats a room in minutes using little electricity. In a house where the winter sun comes in for only a few hours, it is the quickest way to warm the living room or a bedroom without turning on the whole heating system.
Damp
On stone-built ground floors, damp is as much of a nuisance as temperature. Air conditioning dries while it cools and has a “Dry” mode that dehumidifies while hardly lowering the temperature. The condensate drain is run to a safe point.

The IDAE recommends 21 °C in winter and 26 °C in summer, and puts consumption at around 7% for each degree. The output for each room comes from its thermal loads (heat-load calculation), as the RITE requires: a unit that is too big dehumidifies worse, because it stops before it has dried the air.

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in Esporles
Does air conditioning help take the damp out of a house in Esporles?
Yes. As it cools, the unit condenses the water in the air and sends it out through the drain, and the “Dry” mode dehumidifies while hardly cooling. The RITE takes a relative humidity of 45 to 60% in summer as its design conditions. For it to dry well, the output has to be just right: it is calculated from the thermal loads of the room. The stone ground floors of Esporles are where you notice it most.
Does a split heat well in an Esporles winter?

How much noise does air conditioning make at night?
A modern unit, very little. As an example, Fujitsu's KG series declares 19 dB(A) for the indoor unit in quiet mode. The outdoor unit is placed away from windows, on anti-vibration mounts; the limits are set by Act 1/2007 on noise pollution in the Balearic Islands.
Why does the outdoor unit give off steam in winter?
It is a defrost cycle. With cold and humidity, and in a valley like Esporles that happens often, the outdoor coil frosts over and the unit reverses the cycle for a few minutes to clear it. It is normal and it is not a fault. That is why the outdoor unit has its own drain and is not placed where the water would be a nuisance. The manufacturer of the General ASEH09KJCAL, for example, warns that it can last up to 15 minutes.
Can I put the outdoor unit on the front of my house in the village?
First we check whether the house is listed and what Esporles's planning rules require. The usual thing is to take it to a courtyard or a terrace, where it cannot be seen from the street. If you live in a block, the façade is a common element: the Horizontal Property Act (art. 7.1) requires you not to alter the external appearance and to tell the owners' association beforehand.
How often is it serviced?
The servicing set by the regulations or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's. The RITE (IT.3, table 3.1) sets as a minimum one service every 4 years in homes for units of up to 12 kW. On a unit that works all year round, cooling and heating, the filters are cleaned every few weeks. In Esporles, where the unit also works in winter, it is best not to stretch it.
