Sewage treatment plants in Esporles, so nothing goes back into the torrent

The village of Esporles sends its waste water through a main sewer to Palma's treatment works, and the torrent has felt the difference. The fincas in the valley that this sewer does not reach have to treat their water themselves. We are Joaquín and Juan, installers in Mallorca since 1998: we supply the new treatment plant, install it, do the electrics and prepare and sign the documents for your engineer to file.

What the Water Plan says about the Esporles torrent

The Esporles torrent has its own data sheet in Annex 9 of the Balearic Water Plan (water body 11013007). It is a good summary of why what each house in the valley does matters, and here 1,148 of the 5,321 residents live in scattered dwellings outside the village, according to the 2025 INE gazetteer.

A torrent that is improving

The catchment covers 38 km² and runs largely through rural land. According to the Plan, Esporles's waste water is carried by a main sewer to Palma's treatment works, so there is no longer any discharge into the torrent, and it puts the clear improvement in the water down to that: the chemical status is now very good. The biological status does not yet reach good status.

Springs people drink from

The Plan points out that some of the springs in the catchment are used for water supply and for irrigation, and EMAYA abstracts the Font d'en Baster for Palma, on the possessió (estate) of Son Quint, within the municipality of Esporles. A badly sited treatment plant upstream of a spring is a problem for whoever drinks from it: that is why we ask which springs, wells and watercourses are near your house.

What remains: rural land

With the village dealt with, the Plan relies on the general measures to reduce the pollutant load on rural land. In other words, on every finca off the mains having a system that really treats the water, instead of a cesspit.

The rules here

What the rules require next to a torrent

The system has to be installed without polluting the water, taking the ground and its position into account (art. 70.7.a and c), and it must not collect rainwater (art. 70.7.d). The treated water is reused on the plot, with 25 m² of green area per population equivalent (art. 70.12); it is not sent to the torrent.

The unit, approved with CE marking and compliant with EN 12566 (art. 70.14), is declared to the Balearic water authority (Direcció General de Recursos Hídrics) (art. 70.4). As the installation company we prepare and sign the documents your engineer asks for; your architect or your engineer files them.

What we do

What we do in Esporles, and what others do

  • A new treatment plant instead of the cesspit, approved with CE marking and compliant with EN 12566 (art. 70.14), achieving at least 70% in BOD₅, 75% in COD and 70% in suspended solids (art. 70.10). All brands; as an example, the GRAF one2clean.
  • Installation, electrics and commissioning, with the unit and the irrigation area away from springs, wells and the torrent (art. 70.7.a and c), as a licensed low-voltage installation company. We don't subcontract anyone.
  • Excavation and sludge: your builder opens the pit following what we give them in writing according to the manufacturer, and an authorised waste company takes the sludge away, with receipts kept for 5 years (art. 70.7.f).
  • The services required by the rules or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's (on the GRAF one2clean, twice a year), with a signed report. In the valley we also check that rainwater does not get into the unit (art. 70.7.d).
  • The documents for Recursos Hídrics: a responsible declaration always, for a small house too (art. 70.4), and prior authorisation if the water goes to a drainage trench. We prepare and sign them as the installation company; your architect or engineer files them.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about treatment plants in Esporles

Where does Esporles's waste water go?

The village's goes to Palma: according to Annex 9 of the Balearic Water Plan (Royal Decree 49/2023), it is carried by a main sewer to Palma's treatment works and there is no discharge into the torrent; EMAYA confirms that its EDAR 2 plant receives water from Esporles. The Plan also provides for upgrading that pipeline, with about €290,000. Fincas and houses with no access to the main sewer need their own system (art. 70.1).

My finca in Esporles is next to the torrent: can I discharge the treated water into it?

That is not what the rules provide for. The Balearic Water Plan (Royal Decree 49/2023, art. 70.12) requires the treated water to be reused on the plot itself, with 25 m² of green area per population equivalent. If there is no land, what is left is a sealed holding tank emptied periodically or a drainage trench, with a favourable report and prior authorisation. The Esporles torrent is a water body the Plan wants to bring to good status.

There is a spring near my house: does it affect the treatment plant?

It affects where it goes. The Water Plan requires the system to be installed without polluting the water and taking the ground and its position into account (art. 70.7.a and c of Royal Decree 49/2023), and in Esporles there are springs used for water supply, such as the Font d'en Baster, which EMAYA abstracts for Palma. We look at the location in the DGRH map viewer and choose the site for the unit and for the irrigation away from the spring.

I live in ses Rotgetes de Canet: do I need a treatment plant?

It depends on whether your house can be connected to a network. In February 2023, Esporles town hall and the Consell de Mallorca signed an agreement to draw up the project for the first phase of the estate's sewer network. As long as a home has no access to the mains sewer, the Balearic Water Plan (Royal Decree 49/2023, art. 70.1) requires it to have its own system. Ask at the town hall how things stand in your street; we'll tell you which unit fits.

Does the treatment plant of a small house in Esporles have to be declared?

Yes, always. The responsible declaration to the Direcció General de Recursos Hídrics is filed below 12 population equivalents too (art. 70.4 of the Balearic Water Plan). Above 12 (not with exactly 12), in addition, the performance check and the sludge register are sent in every year (art. 70.11).

Which unit do you install and what maintenance does it need?

A new treatment plant, approved, with CE marking and compliant with EN 12566 (art. 70.14 of the Water Plan). We work with every brand; as an example, the GRAF one2clean, whose manual asks for two services a year: we carry out those set by the regulations or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's. The sludge is emptied by an authorised waste management company (art. 70.7.f). In the Esporles valley, with its rain, we check that rainwater does not get into the unit.
