Andratx: salt air, hillsides and houses that open in season
AEMET has no climate normal for Andratx; the nearest coastal station with normals is Palma harbour (1981-2010): 29.8 °C average August maximum, 22.5 °C minimum and 71 % mean relative humidity over the year. In the port, Camp de Mar or Sant Elm, with the sea right there, the air the outdoor unit breathes carries salt.
Salt and the outdoor coil
The outdoor unit's coil is made of thin aluminium fins, and salt corrodes them sooner. Some manufacturers offer coils with anti-corrosion treatment: we check the data sheet of the model you choose. And we place it sheltered from direct spray without starving it of the air it needs.
Hillside villas: where to hide the unit
In the port's terraced villas nobody wants a machine on the terrace with the view. We take it to a lower terrace or a ventilated plant room, within the pipe length and height difference in the manufacturer's manual. A house closed for months
If you live abroad part of the year, it helps to switch the air on before you arrive: many units can be controlled over Wi-Fi, built in or with a module. With the house shut in summer, "Dry" mode helps with humidity. And the unit is serviced before the season, not on the day you open the house.

Cool only what you use
In a large villa the saving lies in zoning: ducted zones or a multi-split with one indoor unit per room, so empty bedrooms aren't cooled. IDAE puts it at about 7 % less for every degree of setting, and lowering awnings and blinds in the sunny hours takes work off the unit.
Which gas it uses and what Europe says
Current splits use R32, GWP 675 (Regulation (EU) 2024/573, annex I). That regulation bans the placing on the market since 2025 of single split systems with under 3 kg of gas with a GWP of 750 or more, and from 2029 of air-to-air splits up to 12 kW with gas of GWP 150 or more, unless safety requires it. What is already installed can keep running and be repaired.
Guarantee and paperwork
Units carry the 3-year legal guarantee of article 120 of the TRLGDCU, plus the manufacturer's. You get an invoice and, where the installation requires it, the certificate registered on the Balearic Government's e-office. And we explain it in English, Spanish or German.

My Andratx house is empty much of the year: can I switch the air on from abroad?
Yes, if the unit supports it: many models can be controlled over Wi-Fi, built in or with a manufacturer's module. That way you cool or dry the house before arriving. With 71 % mean humidity on the coast (AEMET, Palma harbour, 1981-2010), "Dry" mode is often what you notice most when opening a villa in Port d'Andratx.
Does the salt in the port damage the outdoor unit?
It speeds up wear: the aluminium coil corrodes sooner on the seafront. So in Andratx we check whether the manufacturer offers anti-corrosion treatment, shield the unit from spray and service it at the stricter frequency of the RITE (IT.3, table 3.1) and the manufacturer's manual.
What suits a large villa in Camp de Mar: ducted or multi-split?
It's decided from each room's heat loads, as the RITE requires, and from the space above the false ceiling. If the system exceeds 12 kW, the minimum maintenance changes too: in homes, from every 4 years to every 2 (RITE, IT.3, table 3.1), and if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's schedule applies.
Can the outdoor unit go far away so it isn't heard from the pool?
Yes, up to the pipe length and height difference in the manufacturer's manual. For reference, a 2.5 kW outdoor unit such as the General AOEH09KJCA states 44 dB(A) in heating in an anechoic chamber. In Andratx your neighbour's pool counts as much as yours: noise is regulated by the Balearic Act 1/2007.
What happens if the unit loses gas while I'm away from Mallorca?
Regulation (EU) 2024/573 requires a leak to be repaired without undue delay, and nothing is recharged until it's found. If the unit's charge reaches 5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (with R32, about 7.4 kg of gas), article 5 also requires periodic leak checks, with exceptions for hermetically sealed equipment. We work under Royal Decree 115/2017 certification and tell you before acting.
What's different in a stone house in Andratx village or S'Arracó?
Away from the port there's less salt and a wider swing: the nearest inland AEMET series, Palma airport, gives a 3.8 °C average January minimum and 15 frost days a year. Thick walls keep the cool in, so the unit is often smaller than in a glazed villa, and a heat-pump split doubles as heating.
