Air conditioning in Llucmajor,

Mallorca's largest municipality, with two climates
The Palma airport station sits right next to s'Arenal and is the closest AEMET climate normal to Llucmajor (1981-2010): in July and August the average maximum exceeds 31 °C, the January average minimum is 3.8 °C and there are 15 frost days a year. Between Cala Pi and the town there are many kilometres: on the coast humidity rules, inland the cold nights.
Marès houses and inland fincas
Marès is a porous local sandstone that breathes; thick walls keep the day's cool and the winter's warmth. On a finca the outdoor unit can go far from the house, within the pipe length the manufacturer allows. And in winter it heats: a split such as the General ASEH09KJCAL, for example, states heating operation down to −20 °C outside.
Coastal developments
Badia Gran, Maioris, Son Verí or s'Arenal have everything: detached houses, terraced houses and apartments. With the sea nearby the outdoor unit needs a spot sheltered from salt, and where there's an owners' association the Horizontal Property Act (art. 7.1) requires notice before touching the facade or common areas.

At Casa Llucmajor (2017-2018) we installed underfloor heating across the whole floor, a heat pump and ducted climate control, with the fan coil hidden in the false ceiling. The floor heats in winter and the cooling comes from the fan coil, never the floor, which would condense in Mallorca's humidity: see the full project.

Heating with a heat pump
A heat-pump split takes heat from the outside air. The manufacturer warns that output drops the colder it gets and that, in cold humid weather, the outdoor unit runs defrost cycles of up to 15 minutes: that's normal. IDAE recommends 21 °C in winter and puts the saving at about 7 % per degree.
When the house goes over 12 kW
On a large finca with ducts, the system can exceed 12 kW, and that changes the RITE's minimum maintenance (IT.3, table 3.1): in homes, from every 4 years to every 2. If the unit's manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's schedule applies.
Refrigerant and leaks
If a unit loses gas, Regulation (EU) 2024/573 requires repair without undue delay: first the leak is found, then it's recharged. New units use R32 (GWP 675). We handle the circuit under Royal Decree 115/2017 certification.

Will a split heat a house in Llucmajor town in winter?
Yes, if it's a heat pump and correctly sized. The nearest AEMET series, Palma airport, gives a 3.8 °C average January minimum and 15 frost days a year (1981-2010); a unit such as the General ASEH09KJCAL states heating down to −20 °C outside. In Llucmajor it almost always works well within its limit, though output drops the colder it gets.
Why does the outdoor unit steam and stop on cold Llucmajor nights?
It's defrosting. In cold, humid weather the outside coil frosts over, and the unit reverses its cycle for a few minutes to melt the ice: the manufacturer mentions up to 15 minutes. Steam comes out, the fan stops, then it carries on. Inland in Llucmajor, with frost nights in January, it's normal and not a fault.
What capacity does a marès house in Llucmajor need?
There's no per-square-metre figure that works: capacity is calculated room by room from the heat loads, as the RITE requires. In a marès house wall thickness, orientation, afternoon sun and windows all count; in summer, with average maximums over 31 °C in July and August (AEMET, airport), the western sun weighs a lot.
Can I combine air conditioning with the underfloor heating I already have?
Yes, and that's what we did at Casa Llucmajor: the underfloor heating warms in winter and the cooling comes from fan coils, ducts or splits. Cooling never goes through the floor: in Mallorca's humidity it would condense. The RITE takes 45-60 % humidity as the summer design value, and that's achieved by the air unit, which dries while it cools.
How much noise can an outdoor unit make in a Llucmajor development?
It's regulated by the Balearic noise-pollution Act 1/2007 and the municipal by-law. As a data-sheet reference, a 2.5 kW outdoor unit such as the General AOEH09KJCA states 44 dB(A) in heating in an anechoic chamber. In Son Verí or Badia Gran we place it away from bedrooms, yours and the neighbours', on anti-vibration mounts.
What should I send you for a quote without you coming out to Cala Pi?
Photos of each room and the wall for the indoor unit, of the outdoor spot, the square metres and ceiling height, which way each room faces, the distance between indoor and outdoor unit counted in steps, and a photo of the fuse box. If you're replacing a unit, a photo of the valves with a €1 coin beside them. We reply within 24-48 hours on working days.
