A split isn't just for July. In Maria de la Salut we fit inverter heat-pump units that cool in summer and heat in winter using far less than a stove. We are Joaquín and Juan, RITE-licensed and F-gas certified, and we do the fitting ourselves.

Your village
Maria de la Salut has the climate of the interior: hot summer afternoons and cool, damp winter mornings. According to PVGIS, the January average is 10.8 °C and the August average 25.9 °C. A heat-pump unit covers both ends.
The unit takes the heat out of the room and expels it outside. What matters is that the outdoor unit has good airflow around it and, if possible, shade: manufacturers' installation manuals require clear space around it so that the air can circulate.
The same unit does the reverse: it takes heat from the outside air and brings it into the house. In cold, damp weather, the outdoor unit frosts up and the unit stops for a while to clear itself: that is the defrost cycle, a normal function described in the manuals. And it uses less than an electric heater, which gives at most the heat it consumes.
A good unit badly fitted performs poorly. Pulling a vacuum on the circuit before opening the gas, the leak test, the drain laid to a fall and tested, and the power cable with its protection: that is what we do ourselves, and what sets one installation apart from another.
In numbers
In heating mode, a split delivers several times the electricity it uses as heat, because it moves heat instead of producing it. An electric heater or an oil-filled radiator gives, at best, the same as it uses. That is the winter saving.
In cooling mode, the saving is in the inverter and in the temperature. IDAE recommends 26 °C in summer and 21 °C in winter, and puts the cost of each extra degree of heating, or each degree less of cooling, at around 7 %.
In the PVGIS monthly series (European Commission, 2005-2020 averages), Maria de la Salut averages 26.2 °C in July. The output is calculated for the room, from its thermal loads, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1).

How we work
Send us photos of the rooms and of the spot for the outdoor unit, with approximate sizes. If we need to see it, we will come and look.
We calculate the thermal loads of each room, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), and send you an itemised quote.
We fit it ourselves: vacuum and leak test of the circuit, drain tested and the unit running, with the 3-year legal guarantee and the manufacturer warranty.
Common questions
Yes. A heat-pump split heats on far less electricity than an electric heater, because it transfers heat instead of producing it. In Maria de la Salut, with a January average of 10.8 °C according to PVGIS, it works in comfortable conditions. For the whole house and the hot water, the option is an air-to-water heat pump: see heat pumps in Maria de la Salut.
No, it is a defrost. In cold, damp weather, the outdoor unit's coil gets covered in frost and the unit reverses the cycle for a few minutes to melt it; that is why steam comes out and it stops heating for a moment. On the coldest, dampest mornings of the Pla de Mallorca (the January average is 10.8 °C according to PVGIS) it is common. If the defrosts get very long or very frequent, the unit should be checked.
That it can legally handle the unit's refrigerant gas. The gas circuit of a split may only be handled by staff holding the F-gas certification (RD 115/2017, art. 3.1). Pulling the vacuum and testing for leaks before charging is our way of preventing the leaks that EU Regulation 2024/573 requires to be avoided (art. 4). In addition, the thermal installation is governed by the RITE. We are RITE-licensed and F-gas certified, and we work all over Mallorca.
IDAE recommends 26 °C in summer and 21 °C in winter. Each degree of difference means around 7 % in consumption; by that reckoning, cooling to 23 °C instead of 26 °C is in the order of 20 % more. In a house in Maria de la Salut it helps a lot to lower the blinds at midday and to ventilate at night, when the air cools down.
It depends on the house, but the starting figure is this: in the PVGIS monthly series (European Commission, 2005-2020 averages), Maria de la Salut averages 26.2 °C in July and 25.9 °C in August; Palma, 26.5 and 26.4 °C. The strong heat is concentrated in the afternoons of July and August. The rest of the time, a well-sized unit works little or is switched off.
