Air conditioning in Sineu, quiet and without touching the façade
In the old town of Sineu, with the houses joined together and the streets narrow, a badly placed air conditioner bothers half the street. We fit splits and ducted units in village houses and on fincas, with the outdoor unit where it is neither seen nor heard. What a house in Sineu needs
Sineu is in the centre of the island, at around 140 metres. PVGIS (ERA5 reanalysis, 2011-2020) gives mean maximums of 31 °C in July and August, and August nights of around 22 °C: the air is used for sleeping too.
Noise, at night
In a quiet village the outdoor unit is heard when everything falls silent. A unit with a low declared noise level is chosen and placed away from the neighbours' windows and on anti-vibration mounts, within the limits of the Balearic Noise Act 1/2007.
Houses in the old town
The place for the outdoor unit is the back yard, a courtyard or the roof. On the street, neither the unit nor the drain pipe. If the house is listed, the work needs a licence and it is checked beforehand.
Bedrooms under the roof
The upstairs rooms, under the roof, are the ones that heat up most. There a properly sized split with night mode makes more sense than cooling the whole house.

For sleeping there is no need to go down to 22 °C: IDAE recommends 26 °C and each degree lower costs around 7% more. The output of each split comes from the room's thermal loads, as the RITE requires: a room under the roof isn't calculated like one on the ground floor.

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in Sineu
Will the noise of the air conditioning bother my neighbours in Sineu?
It shouldn't, if the unit is chosen and placed well: a low declared noise level, away from the neighbour's windows and on anti-vibration mounts. For example, the General ASEH09KJCAL outdoor unit declares 44 dB(A) in heating. The limits are set by the Balearic Noise Act 1/2007.
Can I hang the outdoor unit on the façade of my house in the centre of Sineu?
We avoid it whenever there is an alternative: back yard, courtyard or roof, with the pipework inside. If the building is listed, the work needs a licence (Balearic Planning Act 12/2017) and Sineu Town Council may require the unit not to be visible. We check it before quoting.
What output do I need for a bedroom under the roof?
Whatever comes out of calculating that room's thermal loads, as the RITE requires: the roof, the orientation, the windows and the insulation all count. In Sineu mean July and August maximums are around 31 °C according to PVGIS (ERA5, 2011-2020), and a room under the tiles needs more than one on the ground floor.
Does leaving the air on all night use a lot?
Less than it seems with an inverter at 26 °C and in night mode: the compressor runs at low speed. IDAE reckons around 7% more consumption for each degree you go down. In Sineu, with August nights at a mean minimum of about 22 °C (PVGIS, ERA5), a few hours are often enough.
Does a split heat in winter in Sineu?
Yes: it is a heat pump. In Sineu the mean January minimum is about 8.2 °C according to PVGIS (ERA5, 2011-2020), and units such as the General ASEH09KJCAL declare heating operation down to −20 °C. In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs defrosts of up to 15 minutes, according to its manufacturer; it's normal.
What maintenance does it need?
The stricter of the regulations and the unit's manual. The RITE (IT 3.3, table 3.1) asks as a minimum, in homes and up to 12 kW, for a service every 4 years; the manufacturer, for the filters to be cleaned every few weeks. In a Sineu house that uses the air in summer and in winter, it's best not to let it slip.
