The heat pump in Peguera's climate
Anyone from central Europe knows what a heat pump is, but not always how it changes in Mallorca: here winter is short and mild, summer long and humid, and the unit works for both.
Residents' homes: the same as back home, in a different climate
With winters like those here, an air-to-water heat pump almost always works well away from its difficult conditions. What has to be added is summer: fan coils or ducts for cooling, because underfloor heating only heats. In Mallorca, with the humidity, a cold floor gets condensation.
Small hotels and apartments
Peguera has many family hotels and many blocks of holiday apartments. Their hot water comes under Royal Decree 487/2022 (annexes III and IV): 60 °C in the storage tank, above 50 °C at taps and return, and cleaning and disinfection before reopening after the winter closure. The outdoor unit, among pines and neighbours
On a hillside plot, with neighbours above and below, the spot for the outdoor unit is chosen for noise and for air: manuals require clearances around it, and pine needles clog the coil. We look for a ventilated place, away from bedrooms and easy to clean.

Where the saving comes from
A heat pump doesn't burn anything: it moves heat from the air. The Daitsu Multi-Hybrid, for example, declares a SCOP of 3.72 (official catalogue 2024-25): about 3.7 kWh of heat for every kWh of electricity, on average over the season. An oil boiler or an electric water heater don't go above one.
According to IDAE, Spain's energy agency, each extra degree of heating raises consumption by about 7 %, and 21 °C is comfortable. In a hotel, the big saving is in the tank: properly sized, the unit makes the hot water in the mild hours of the day.
Grants
Heat pump grants in Peguera
FACTOR 2026 (Balearic Government): 70 % for individuals, counting at most €1,000/kWt (plus €450/kWt if a new distribution system, such as fan coils or underfloor heating, goes in too) and capped at €25,000 per installation. Open until 28 February 2027 or until the budget runs out; it requires a seasonal performance (SPF) above 2.5, doesn't cover air-to-air units in homes and requires domicile in the Balearic Islands, so a second home is usually left out.
The requirement is domicile, not nationality: anyone who lives in Peguera all year meets it. A business has its own conditions in the same call.

We prepare the paperwork and, with your authorisation, file and justify the grant; you sign the application and the grant is paid into your bank account. The authorities decide whether it is awarded.

I know heat pumps from Germany: do they work the same in Peguera?
Better in winter and with more work in summer. In Peguera winter is mild: the average January low at Palma airport is 3.8 °C (AEMET, 1981-2010), so the unit performs close to its best figure; the Daitsu Multi-Hybrid, for example, declares a SCOP of 3.72. The difference is summer: here it is asked for cooling too, with fan coils.
I live in Peguera and I'm German: can I apply for FACTOR 2026?
Yes, if your domicile is in the Balearic Islands: the call requires that of individuals and makes no distinction by nationality (BOIB no. 83 of 2-7-2026). It covers 70 %, counting at most €1,000/kWt, plus €450/kWt with a new distribution system, and capped at €25,000 per installation, until 28 February 2027. If the house in Peguera is a holiday home, you normally won't qualify.
I have a small hotel in Peguera: can a heat pump make the hot water?
Yes, designed for the temperatures of Royal Decree 487/2022 (annexes III and IV): 60 °C in the storage tank and above 50 °C at taps and return, with back-up for thermal disinfection. In a hotel in Peguera, which opens in the mild months, the heat pump works in good conditions. After the winter closure, the rules require the installation to be cleaned and disinfected before reopening.
Why don't you cool with underfloor heating in Peguera?
It exists, but in Mallorca we don't offer it: here, with the humidity of the summer air, a cold floor gets condensation. Underfloor heating heats, and cooling comes from fan coils or ducts with the same heat pump. In Peguera, by the sea, the RITE (IT 1.1.4.1.2) sets 23-25 °C and 45-60 % humidity as summer comfort, and the fan coil helps achieve it.
Where does the outdoor unit go in a hillside house in Peguera?
Where it has open air, doesn't disturb anyone and can be cleaned. Each manufacturer's manual sets the clearances around it; the Balearic noise pollution act (Law 1/2007, arts. 9 and 11) and Calvià's bylaw, the noise limits towards the neighbour. In Peguera, with pines nearby, needles clog the coil and you have to be able to reach it.
How often is a heat pump in Peguera serviced?
Whichever is stricter of the RITE and your unit's manufacturer's manual, plus the leak checks of Regulation (EU) 2024/573 (art. 5) if its gas charge brings it under them. In a hotel or holiday apartments in Peguera the hot-water checks of Royal Decree 487/2022 are added. We give you the schedule in writing when we hand over the installation.
