Heat pumps in Calvià,
where winter doesn’t last
We’re Joaquín and Juan. Calvià has room for the Bendinat villa with an oil boiler, the Santa Ponsa flat that fills up in summer and the house in Es Capdellà, inland. An air-to-water heat pump gives them hot water, cooling through fan coils and heating for the few cold days, without burning anything. We’re a RITE-registered thermal installer: from survey to legalisation and the grant paperwork. No subcontractors.

The figures
A short winter and a humid summer
South-west Mallorca has one of the shortest winters on the island. We measured it in the typical meteorological year from PVGIS, the European Commission’s tool, at four points in the municipality (monthly averages):
- Bendinat, by the sea: 13.0 °C on average from December to February.
- Santa Ponsa: February, the coldest month, averages 11.3 °C, and December to February 12.8 °C.
- Calvià village (118 m) and Es Capdellà (137 m): 13.0 and 13.2 °C on average from December to February.
- In summer, July averages 25.4 °C in Santa Ponsa (24.3 °C from June to August), with average August humidity of 72 %.
What that means for your home: heating runs little, so most of the saving lies in year-round hot water and in cooling on summer nights. A fan coil cools and dries the air at once; underfloor heating stays for warmth. Cooling through the floor exists, but we don’t offer it in Mallorca: with the humidity here, a cold floor condenses. Output is sized from the home’s heat loads, as the RITE regulations require (IT 1.2.4.1.1).

What we see most
The Bendinat or Portals villa with an oil boiler
It’s the most common story in Calvià: an eighties or nineties villa with a big boiler, an oil tank in the garden and radiators or underfloor heating. The heat pump takes the boiler’s place and, where possible, uses the existing emitters; a room-by-room heat-load calculation shows whether any fall short with cooler water.
- The boiler and tank are no longer needed, along with the refills and the smell.
- For summer, fan coils or ducts run by the same unit.
- For example, the Daitsu Multi-Hybrid we fit has a COP of up to 4.24 and a seasonal SCOP of 3.72 (official Daitsu catalogue 2024-25); we work with all brands.

A long season
The pool, and the house used from May to October
The pool
Heating a pool with an electric element or oil is one of the biggest costs in a villa. The same heat pump that climate-controls the house can warm the pool water, and to heat it properly a dedicated pool unit is fitted, chosen by water volume. With summers averaging 24 °C from June to August, in Calvià it stretches the swimming season on little energy.
While the house is closed
Many owners in Santa Ponsa, Peguera or Costa d'en Blanes spend spring and summer here. The system is left programmed, with frost protection on and controllable from your phone: the house uses only what it needs while you’re away and greets you with hot water ready.
Right by the sea
From Illetes to Portals many villas sit right on the water. The outdoor unit goes where the sea breeze doesn’t hit it head-on, on a properly finished base, and is chosen with marine-grade protection for its heat exchanger. Servicing follows the RITE schedule (IT 3.3, table 3.1) or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer’s.

Where the saving comes from and what FACTOR 2026 pays
A heat pump that EU rules count as renewable delivers more than 2.5 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity over the season (Decision 2013/114/EU). The thermostat does the rest: according to the IDAE (Spain’s energy agency), each extra degree adds about 7 % to consumption; 21 °C by day and 15-17 °C in bedrooms are enough.
FACTOR 2026 (BOIB no. 83, 2 July 2026) funds 70 % of eligible cost, on a ceiling of €1,000 per kW of heat output (€1,450 if the distribution is new too), capped at €25,000. Three conditions weigh heavily in Calvià:
- Balearic domicile: with the villa as a second home and your domicile abroad, you normally won’t qualify;
- splits (air-to-air) are not eligible in homes;
- first come, first served until 28 February 2027 or until funds run out.

Yes, but for a different reason than inland: in Bendinat the PVGIS typical year averages 13.0 °C from December to February, so heating counts for little and the saving comes mainly from year-round hot water and summer cooling, which the same heat pump provides through fan coils.
Can the heat pump also heat my pool in Calvià?
Yes, and it’s one of the most common requests here. The same heat pump that climate-controls the house can warm the pool water to stretch the swimming season. In Calvià, where heating a pool with oil or an electric element eats the bill, switching to a heat pump —and even better with solar panels— gives you a comfortable pool for a fraction of what you used to pay. To heat it properly we fit a dedicated pool unit: we work with the Daitsu Coral II, sized by water volume — from the 18-35 m³ model up to the 90-170 m³ one — running with ambient temperatures from -2 °C to 40 °C and a sound level of 38 to 57 dB(A) depending on the model. It has a smart grid function so it heats when there’s spare sun (official Daitsu catalogue 2024-25). That’s why we measure the pool before quoting a price.
I only use my Santa Ponsa house from May to October. Does it pay?

I have a villa in Bendinat with an oil boiler. Is switching to a heat pump complicated?
Usually not. The heat pump takes the boiler’s place and uses the radiators or underfloor heating if they can heat with cooler water. For example, the Daitsu Multi-Hybrid has a SCOP of 3.72 (official Daitsu catalogue 2024-25). In Bendinat the boiler and tank are no longer needed.
With the outdoor unit so close to the sea in Portals or Illetes, will it withstand the salt?
It will if it’s chosen and placed with that in mind: marine-grade heat exchanger protection on its datasheet, whatever the brand, out of the direct breeze and on a proper base. In Portals or Illetes servicing follows the RITE schedule (IT 3.3, table 3.1) or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer’s.
I live outside Spain and have a house in Calvià. Can I apply for FACTOR 2026?
