The villa with the thirty-year-old oil boiler

We turn up at a house in Bendinat or El Toro and find an oil tank buried in the garden and a huge boiler that swallows a lorry-load of fuel every winter. We take all of that out, fit the heat pump and, where we can, reuse the underfloor heating or the radiators already there. No more oil smell, no more refills, no more dread when the bill lands. The house ends up cleaner, cheaper and with a better energy rating.

The heated pool that was eating the bill

In Santa Ponsa and Portals there are loads of heated pools, almost always warmed by a system that cost a fortune. When we put in a heat pump for the pool —and add solar— the owner stretches the swimming season from March to November without watching the meter in fear. It's one of the changes people are most grateful for.

Plenty of Calvià homes —chalets and apartments alike— sit empty for half the year.
