Heat pumps in Campos,

The area
One municipality, three kinds of home
Campos is flat from end to end. PVGIS puts the village at around 25 m above sea level and sa Ràpita practically at the waterline. In between lie the Salobrar salt marsh and es Trenc beach, protected as the es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos land and marine nature park: 1,441 ha of land and 2,327 ha of sea between sa Ràpita and Colònia de Sant Jordi (Balearic Government). Each part of that landscape asks something different of a house.
In the village: thick walls, little outdoor space
Many houses in the old centre have stone or marès walls and only a small courtyard or roof terrace. We look for a spot for the outdoor unit that won’t bother the neighbours, and if you’re renovating we suggest underfloor heating, which heats with lukewarm water and keeps the walls clear.
On the plain: farms with an oil tank
Out in the countryside an oil boiler with radiators, or bottled gas, is the norm. The heat pump takes the boiler’s place, the tank is no longer needed and, since there’s usually roof or ground space, solar panels in Campos can supply the electricity it uses. If the farm is off-grid, like the one in our Campos finca project, the heat pump goes into the panel and battery sizing from day one.
On the coast: sa Ràpita and ses Covetes
Here you find plenty of second homes that are lived in a few months a year. What matters most is an outdoor unit that copes with salty air and a house you can run from afar: switch on the heating or hot water the day before you arrive, and set it to standby when you leave.
The data
A Campos winter, measured
The milder the air a heat pump draws from, the better it performs. To see what that air is like in Campos, we checked the European Commission’s PVGIS typical meteorological year for the village and for sa Ràpita:
- December is the coolest month in the village, averaging 10.9 °C.
- From December to February the average is 11.9 °C in the village and 12.6 °C in sa Ràpita: that’s when the heating really earns its keep.
- In summer, July averages 25.8 °C in the village and 26.5 °C in sa Ràpita, where June to August averages 26.0 °C.
- Average relative humidity in December is around 78 %.
What that means at home: the compressor spends winter well inside its comfort zone, so seasonal efficiency stays high, and summer calls for cooling at night as well, especially on the coast. Underfloor heating is for warmth only; for summer we fit fan coils, ducts or splits run by the same heat pump. A typical year is not a record year: the odd frosty night out in the fields can still happen, and the unit is sized from your home’s heat-load calculation, as the RITE requires.

The outdoor unit and the sea breeze
In sa Ràpita and ses Covetes the breeze carries salt, and salt eats into the aluminium fins of the outdoor coil and the fixings. Several manufacturers coat those fins as standard. For example, Fujitsu General says its Blue Fin treatment resists corrosion roughly twice as well as an inorganic fin and seven times as well as bare aluminium, while warning that it doesn’t make the whole unit corrosion-proof and that the coil must be kept free of salt (manufacturer’s technical note).
So on the Campos coast we do three things:
- Choose a unit whose data sheet states its protection for marine environments, whatever the brand.
- Put the outdoor unit somewhere sheltered: an inner courtyard, a wall facing away from the sea or a roof with a parapet, always as its manual says.
- Agree the service visits the RITE sets or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer’s, coil cleaning included.

Savings
Where the money stays in your pocket
An oil or bottled-gas boiler, at best, turns slightly less than the energy it burns into heat. A heat pump moves heat from the air into the house: for EU rules to count it as renewable, its seasonal performance factor (SPF) has to be above 2.5, meaning more than 2.5 kWh of heat for every kWh of electricity (Commission Decision 2013/114/EU). With Campos’s mild winters there’s plenty of headroom.
The rest comes down to how you use it. Spain’s energy agency IDAE reckons each extra degree on the thermostat adds about 7 % to heating consumption; it recommends 21 °C by day, says 19-21 °C is enough for most people, and suggests 15-17 °C in bedrooms at night.
If the house sits empty for months
In a summer home in sa Ràpita, the system idles on a low setpoint the rest of the year and you switch it on from your phone before heading back. Grants
The FACTOR 2026 grant in brief
The Balearic Government’s FACTOR 2026 scheme (BOIB no. 83, 2 July 2026, notice 6663) funds air-to-water heat pumps with an SPF above 2.5. It covers 70 % of an eligible cost capped at €1,000 per thermal kW, plus €450 per kW if the heat distribution is new as well, up to €25,000 per installation. What matters for Campos:
- Private individuals must be resident in the Balearic Islands: if the coastal house is a second home and you live elsewhere, it usually won’t apply.
- Air-to-air units such as splits are excluded for homes.
- Work started on or after 1 January 2026 counts.
- Applications are handled first come, first served until 28 February 2027 or until the money runs out.
We prepare the paperwork and, with your authorisation, file and justify the grant; you sign the application and the grant is paid into your bank account. The authorities decide whether it is awarded. All open schemes are listed in renewable energy grants in Mallorca 2026.

My house in sa Ràpita is a stone’s throw from the sea. Will the outdoor unit survive?
It can do well if it’s chosen and placed with salt in mind. We pick a unit whose data sheet covers marine environments (Fujitsu General, for example, states its Blue Fin coating resists corrosion about 7 times better than untreated aluminium) and mount it facing away from the sea in sa Ràpita or ses Covetes. Servicing follows the RITE or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer, with the coil kept clear of salt.
Winter in Campos is mild. Will a heat pump work well?
Yes, these are ideal conditions. In the PVGIS typical year (European Commission), December, the coldest month in Campos village, averages 10.9 °C, and December to February 11.9 °C. With air that mild, a heat pump runs at a seasonal efficiency well above the 2.5 SPF that FACTOR 2026 requires. Output is sized from the house’s heat-load calculation, as the RITE requires.
I have a farm on the Campos plain with an oil boiler and radiators. Can I keep them?
Often, yes. The heat pump replaces the boiler and heats the radiator water; what we check is that each room still gets enough heat with cooler water than the oil boiler supplied, and any radiator that falls short is swapped, based on a room-by-room heat-load calculation. The cooler the water can run, the better the unit performs and the more headroom it has over the 2.5 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity that FACTOR 2026 requires. Radiators don’t cool, so for summer we add fan coils or splits. If the Campos farm has roof or ground space, solar panels can cover part of what the system uses.
Does Campos town hall cut IBI or ICIO for installing a heat pump?
Not at present. We checked its by-laws on 25 September 2026: the IBI property-tax by-law (BOIB no. 11, 24 January 2019) has no energy-efficiency rebate, and the ICIO building-tax by-law (art. 4, BOIB no. 96, 26 July 2022) only lets the full council declare a project of special interest. By-laws do change, so we check again before your work in Campos starts.
I live in Germany and own a house in ses Covetes. Can I apply for FACTOR 2026?
As a private individual, FACTOR 2026 (BOIB no. 83, 2 July 2026), which covers 70 % of the eligible cost, requires residence in the Balearic Islands, so if you live outside Mallorca it usually won’t apply. We only use our Campos beach house from June to September. Is it worth it?
It depends on use, and summer use is heavy: in the PVGIS typical year, sa Ràpita averages 26.0 °C from June to August. The same unit cools through fan coils or splits and heats the shower water, then rests the rest of the year, controllable from your phone. If you visit in winter too, the saving over bottled gas or an electric heater grows.
What temperature should I set to keep the bills down?
IDAE, Spain’s energy agency, recommends 21 °C during the day and 15-17 °C in bedrooms at night, and reckons each extra degree adds about 7 % to consumption. In a stone house in old Campos with underfloor heating, the temperature stays steady and there’s no need to turn it up.
