Water softeners in Mallorca
Savings, sodium, regulations and upkeep, in depth.
Water softeners · Cala d'Or
Cala d'Or doesn't have a single water. The main network gave 49 °fH in its latest SINAC bulletin; the one for es Fortí and Cala Egos, 173 °fH. In an area of villas and apartments that spend the winter shut, knowing which is yours is the first step before fitting a water softener.

The official figure
Cala d'Or is split between two municipalities (Santanyí and, from Cala Ferrera northwards, Felanitx) and between several well-fed networks. These are the ones with a recent bulletin in SINAC:
| Supply network Places it serves | °fH | °dH | Hardness (mg/L CaCO₃) | Calcium (mg/L) | Magnesium (mg/L) | Bulletin date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cala d'Or | 49 | 28 | 492 | 98 | 60 | 27 January 2026 |
| Es Fortí · Cala Egos Cala d'Or | 173 | 97 | 1,730 | 350 | 208 | 5 June 2026 |
| Cala Ferrera · Cala Serena (Felanitx) Cala Ferrera, Cala Serena | 53 | 30 | 534 | 110 | 63 | 14 April 2026 |
| Sa Talaia (Calonge) Calonge | 60 | 34 | 602 | 172 | 42 | 21 June 2026 |
Source: SINAC, Spanish Ministry of Health (sinac.sanidad.gob.es), latest bulletin for each network, checked on 1 October 2026; only networks with a 2025 or 2026 bulletin. Hardness calculated from the calcium and magnesium in the bulletin (CaCO₃ = 2.497 × Ca + 4.118 × Mg); 1 °fH = 10 mg/L CaCO₃, 1 °dH ≈ 17.8 mg/L. The rest of the island is in the Mallorca water table.
The main network gave 492 mg/L CaCO₃ on 27 January 2026. In es Fortí and Cala Egos the bulletin of 5 June 2026 gives 1,730 mg/L CaCO₃: there the water carries far more limescale, and the unit is sized differently. Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena gave 53 °fH, and sa Talaia 60 °fH. The town of Santanyí has its own page.
Where the saving is
At 49 °fH, every 100 m³ of water carries about 49 kg of limescale (as calcium carbonate). In an apartment it ends up in the water heater and on the shower screen; in a villa, in the hot-water cylinder, the heat pump and the taps of every bathroom. And in es Fortí or Cala Egos, at 173 °fH, the sum multiplies.
The manufacturer's reference: Daikin asks in the manual of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump for the water to be treated when it goes over 3 mmol/L (30 °fH). Every network in Cala d'Or exceeds that. With a heat pump in the house, the cylinder is the first thing that needs protecting.
Setting and drinking water
A softener adds about 46 mg/L of sodium for every 10 °fH of limescale it removes. That is why we don't push it: the blend is adjusted, without going below the 55 mg/L of hardness that RD 3/2023 requires, and left measured at the outlet. On the main network the starting point is 49 °fH; in es Fortí and Cala Egos, 173, and the setting is made with each house's hardness.
For drinking and cooking, an unsoftened kitchen tap or reverse osmosis; we recommend the Kinetico RO Premier. In es Fortí and Cala Egos, where there is far more limescale to remove, the two pieces are decided together, once the water at the house has been tested.
Sizing and installation
The size doesn't come from a table: it comes from the hardness measured at your meter, the water the household uses and the flow that showers and taps call for at the same time. The installation is governed by the CTE DB HS 4 building code (non-return valve, bypass, test point and meter): the detail is on water softeners in Mallorca. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico (Premier Plus and Premier Compact), which according to the manufacturer works without electricity and regenerates according to the water used.
The case of Cala d'Or
Most houses in Cala d'Or are used a few months a year. A softener that spends the winter idle is started up before the first stay as the manufacturer's manual sets out, with the salt topped up and the outlet hardness checked. That is the work of JSL Villa Care: we leave it done and noted down before you arrive, and we speak English, Spanish and German.
For hotels and holiday apartments, limescale is part of the Legionella plan: RD 487/2022 asks for a softener or a scale inhibitor to be assessed on the incoming water, and here nearly all of them reopen after a shutdown of months. And on the fincas of Calonge or s'Horta that run on a well or cistern, the lab analysis comes first.
How we work
Photos of the water inlet, of where the unit would go, and how many people live in the house.
Your water's hardness, the pressure and the drain. That decides the size.
Non-return valve, bypass, meter and blend setting, measured at the outlet.
Salt, sanitising and servicing at the interval your unit's manufacturer requires.

Common questions
It depends on the network. According to the latest bulletins reported to SINAC (Spanish Ministry of Health), the main Cala d'Or network has 492 mg/L CaCO₃ (49 °fH, 28 °dH; bulletin of 27 January 2026). Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena, already in Felanitx, 53 °fH; sa Talaia, in Calonge, 60 °fH; and es Fortí and Cala Egos, 173 °fH. That is why we test the water at your house before proposing anything.
Leave it with someone who will start it up before you come back. A unit that has stood idle for months is started as the manufacturer's manual sets out, with proper softener salt and the outlet hardness checked (no less than 55 mg/L, RD 3/2023). With 49 °fH on the Cala d'Or network, if the unit isn't working the limescale goes straight to the water heater. We do it as part of JSL Villa Care.
Because it is another network, with other wells. Its latest bulletin in SINAC (5 June 2026) gives 1,730 mg/L CaCO₃, 173 °fH; the main Cala d'Or network, 49 °fH on 27 January 2026. With that much limescale, the softener is sized with the hardness measured at the house and regenerates far more often; for drinking and cooking a separate tap is kept or reverse osmosis is fitted.
For drinking and cooking, better a separate tap. A softener adds about 46 mg/L of sodium for every 10 °fH of limescale it removes, which is why it is set without going down to zero (RD 3/2023 requires softened water to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness). The usual thing in Cala d'Or is an unsoftened kitchen tap or reverse osmosis; the one we recommend is the Kinetico RO Premier.
Yes. We speak English, Spanish and German, and we reply within 24-48 hours on working days. You send us photos of the water inlet and of where the unit would go, we measure the hardness (in Cala d'Or, between 49 and 173 °fH depending on the network) and we fit it as the CTE DB HS 4 building code requires: non-return valve, bypass and meter. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico.
