Water softener in Santanyí:
127 °fH, among the hardest water in Mallorca.

The town of Santanyí has one of the hardest mains waters in Mallorca: 1,270 mg/L of calcium carbonate, 127 °fH, in the bulletin of 18 August 2026 reported to SINAC. With water like this the usual recipe won't do: a water softener is sized with the hardness measured at your house, and you need to know what it solves and what it doesn't. We tell you without overselling.

How hard is the water in Santanyí and Cala Figuera?

The municipality of Santanyí has many small networks, nearly all from wells. These are the ones for the town, Cala Figuera and es Cap des Moro with a recent bulletin in SINAC (those of Cala d'Or have their own page):

Source: SINAC, Spanish Ministry of Health (sinac.sanidad.gob.es), latest bulletin for each network, checked on 1 October 2026; only networks with a 2025 or 2026 bulletin. Hardness calculated from the calcium and magnesium in the bulletin (CaCO₃ = 2.497 × Ca + 4.118 × Mg); 1 °fH = 10 mg/L CaCO₃, 1 °dH ≈ 17.8 mg/L. The rest of the island is in the Mallorca water table.

To put the town's 127 °fH in context: that is 1,270 mg/L CaCO₃, with 266 mg/L of calcium and 147 of magnesium in the bulletin of 18 August 2026. The two Cala Figuera networks gave 72 °fH (es Molí) and 112 °fH (es Torrent), and es Cap des Moro 77 °fH. None of the 4 falls below 72 °fH, when comfortable for an installation is under 15: for us, the bulletin says which treatment makes sense.

Where the saving is

What 127 °fH water does in a house

At 127 °fH, this water is more than four times the 30 °fH ceiling that Daikin sets for leaving water untreated in the manual of its EKHHP hot-water heat pump: every 100 m³ carries about 127 kg of limescale (as calcium carbonate). A water heater, a boiler or a heat-pump cylinder working on it without treatment fills with scale in a short time, and taps and toilet cisterns suffer just the same.

That is why in Santanyí water treatment is not an extra: it is part of the installation. If you are going to fit a heat pump, it is decided together with the machine, following what its manufacturer asks for the cylinder water.

Setting and drinking water

What a softener does here, and what it doesn't

A softener removes limescale by swapping it for sodium: about 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH. Starting from 127 °fH there is a lot of limescale to remove, and that means a lot of regeneration salt and a unit that works hard. It serves to protect the installation, and it is set without going below the 55 mg/L of hardness in RD 3/2023; for drinking and cooking, a separate tap is kept.

For drinking and cooking, an unsoftened kitchen tap or reverse osmosis (we recommend the Kinetico RO Premier); with water this hard the unit is chosen with the hardness measured at your house, not from a catalogue. First we test; then we tell you which combination makes sense and which doesn't.

Sizing and installation

How it is sized and how it is fitted

The size doesn't come from a table: it comes from the hardness measured at your meter, the water the household uses and the flow that showers and taps call for at the same time. The installation is governed by the CTE DB HS 4 building code (non-return valve, bypass, test point and meter): the detail is on water softeners in Mallorca. We fit every brand; the one we recommend is Kinetico (Premier Plus and Premier Compact), which according to the manufacturer works without electricity and regenerates according to the water used.

The case of Santanyí

Stone houses, fincas with a cistern and well water

In the town there are many renovated stone houses, often owned by people who spend part of the year away: new installation, very hard water and months with the house shut. There the unit needs follow-up, salt and a start-up before each stay, and we handle it through JSL Villa Care.

In the Santanyí countryside the norm is not the mains but the cistern and the well. Rainwater from a cistern has hardly any limescale; water from a well in this area can carry limescale and salt. They are two different problems and neither is solved by eye: the lab analysis comes first. We explain it on well and cistern water.

Common questions

FAQ about water softeners in Santanyí

How hard is Santanyí's water?

According to the latest bulletin reported to SINAC (Spanish Ministry of Health), dated 18 August 2026, the network for Santanyí town has 266 mg/L of calcium and 147 of magnesium: 1,270 mg/L CaCO₃, that is, 127 °fH or 71 °dH. It is among the highest in Mallorca. In Cala Figuera, the two networks gave 72 and 112 °fH.

Is a softener any use with water as hard as Santanyí's?

It is, for its own job: removing limescale and protecting the water heater, boiler, heat pump and taps. With 127 °fH in the bulletin, the unit works hard: it regenerates often and uses salt in proportion to the limescale it removes. And since it swaps limescale for sodium (about 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH), it is not set to zero. That is why in Santanyí we test first and choose the unit with your house's hardness, instead of fitting a standard one.

Can you drink softened water in Santanyí?

For drinking and cooking, better a separate tap. A softener swaps limescale for sodium, about 46 mg/L for every 10 °fH it removes, so the more limescale it takes out, the more sodium it leaves; it is never set to zero, and RD 3/2023 requires softened water to keep at least 55 mg/L of hardness. In Santanyí the usual thing is to leave the kitchen tap unsoftened or fit reverse osmosis; the one we recommend is the Kinetico RO Premier.

I have a cistern on a finca in Santanyí. Do I need a water softener?

For limescale, probably not: rainwater carries hardly any, unlike the 127 °fH of the town network. What a cistern calls for is something else (cleaning, filtration and disinfection) and a lab analysis that says what state the water is in; RD 3/2023 requires drinking water to be disinfected. If the cistern is topped up by tanker or with well water, limescale counts again.

How often does a softener need attention in Santanyí?

More often than almost anywhere else in Mallorca, because salt is used in proportion to the limescale: 1,270 mg/L, that is, 1,270 grams per cubic metre, expressed as CaCO₃. The interval is set by whichever is stricter, the regulations or the manufacturer's manual for your unit; the constants are that proper softener salt never runs short and that the outlet hardness is measured. If you spend periods away, we do it.
