The figures
What a roof in Cala d'Or produces
Cala d'Or sits on the south-east coast with no mountains in view: the horizon PVGIS calculates from the real terrain never rises above 2.7º, and only to the north, where the winter sun never goes. Under that sky, output depends almost entirely on your roof:
- South at 35º (the year-round optimum): 1,569 kWh per kWp a year; 166 in July and 93 in December.
- South at 15º: 1,495 kWh a year, but 516 from June to August against 487 at 35º. Laid flatter, panels yield 6 % more in summer.
- Flat roof, south at 10º: 1,455 kWh a year and 516 in summer.
- West at 15º: 1,330 kWh a year and 501 in summer; it produces in the afternoon, when the air conditioning works hardest.
For a house lived in mainly from June to September, that changes the design: flatter panels, or some facing west, rather than the textbook optimum.

The pool pump and the air con, when the sun is up
The pool filter pump
A pool’s filtration pump runs several hours a day and can be timed for the middle of the day. That way it uses the panels’ output as it’s produced, without going through the grid or a battery. It’s one of the loads that suits self-consumption best in Cala d'Or.
August air conditioning
Air conditioning runs exactly when the panels produce most, and a west-facing slope helps it through the afternoon. If you’re also thinking about a heat pump, shower hot water can come from that sunshine too.
The empty house
When nobody’s there, nearly everything the panels make is surplus. There are two routes: export it and have it offset on your bill (simplified compensation, for systems up to 100 kW under arts. 4.2.a and 14 of Royal Decree 244/2019), or set the system up with no surplus, using an export limiter (art. 4.1.a), if you’d rather not feed the grid. We decide with you based on how you use the house.
For when you’re away
Batteries and remote monitoring
A battery stores the midday surplus for the evening. In a main home it usually makes sense; in a house shut for months it needs proper numbers, because it will sit full and unused for much of the year. We show you both sets of sums.

Close to the sea
The breeze brings salt and dust, which dirty the glass and attack the fixings. We use mounting and fasteners suited to marine air, and cleaning follows the module manufacturer’s manual: in low light, no abrasives and no pressure washing beyond what it allows. Servicing follows the intervals set in that same manual.
Paperwork in order
Legalisation, Santanyí’s ICIO and grants
The system is legalised as self-consumption under Royal Decree 244/2019, with the electrical installation certificate we sign as an authorised low-voltage installer; an off-grid system falls under ITC-BT-40 of the Low Voltage Regulations.
In Santanyí the building tax barely bites: the ICIO bylaw rebates 95 % of the tax, applied only to the cost of the solar system (art. 4.4, BOIB no. 30 of 2022). Santanyí’s IBI property tax, by contrast, has no solar rebate (IBI bylaw, BOIB no. 169 of 2023). The ICIO rebate must be applied for; it isn’t automatic.
- FOTOPAR: the next call opens on 26 January 2027 and runs until 30 April or until the money runs out: €600/kWp up to 5 kWp and €420/kWh for batteries (BOIB no. 171 of 2025). You apply before work starts, and you must be domiciled in the Balearic Islands.
- Income tax: with the system finished and paid for in 2026 and its electrical certificate, additional provision 62 of the Spanish income tax law (IRPF) allows a 10 % deduction, up to €500. If you don’t live in Spain, have your tax adviser confirm it.

How much does a solar panel produce in Cala d'Or?
According to PVGIS, from the European Commission, each kWp facing south at 35º produces 1,569 kWh a year in Cala d'Or: 166 in July and 93 in December. At 15º it drops to 1,495 kWh a year but rises in summer. The horizon takes almost nothing: 2.7º at most, to the north.
We only use the Cala d'Or house in summer. How should the panels go?
Flatter, or partly facing west. In Cala d'Or, south at 15º gives 516 kWh per kWp from June to August against 487 at 35º, according to PVGIS; and a west-facing slope produces in the afternoon, when the air conditioning works hardest.
Is a battery worth it in a Cala d'Or holiday home?
It depends on how many months it’s occupied. If the Cala d'Or house is closed half the year, the battery will sit full and unused much of the time; in a main home it usually pays off better. FOTOPAR 2027 gives €420/kWh for batteries but requires Balearic domicile.
What rebate does Santanyí town hall give for solar panels?
Santanyí’s ICIO bylaw (Santanyí is the municipality of Cala d'Or and Portopetro) rebates 95 % of the tax, applied only to the cost of the solar system (art. 4.4, BOIB no. 30, 26 February 2022). Its IBI bylaw (BOIB no. 169 of 2023) has no solar rebate. You apply at the town hall; it isn’t automatic.
I don’t live in Spain. Can I deduct the Cala d'Or panels from my taxes?
The 10 % deduction (up to €500) under additional provision 62 is part of IRPF; if you don’t live in Spain, have your tax adviser confirm it before counting on it. FOTOPAR 2027 also requires Balearic domicile, for a house in Cala d'Or too.
