Heat pumps in Mallorca
How a heat pump, COP and the multi-hybrid work, in detail.

We're Joaquín and Juan. In Port de Pollença we install air-to-water heat pumps: one unit that gives you heating, hot water and, with fan coils, cooling. Plenty of people stay in the Port all year, and then heating is what matters most. RITE-registered thermal installer, from survey to legalisation and grant. We don't subcontract anyone.

The Port doesn't empty in October like other resorts on the bay. Many houses are lived in in January, with north wind and damp, and are still heated with oil, butane or electric radiators.
For anyone who spends the winter here, the heat pump replaces the boiler and heats with low-temperature water: underfloor heating if you're renovating, fan coils or properly sized radiators if not. The output comes from the heat loads of the house, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), not from the boiler that was there.
A heat pump needs air moving around it, but not a headwind. Manufacturers say so in their manuals: Daikin, for example, says not to expose the suction side directly to the wind and recommends a baffle plate, and warns that on the coast salt can shorten the life of the unit. In the Port we look for the façade sheltered from the north.
In houses let in summer, the same heat pump provides the hot water for a full house and, with fan coils, the cool air. Underfloor heating is for heating: cooling never goes through the floor.
In numbers
An electric radiator turns each kWh of electricity into one kWh of heat, and a boiler a little less than what it burns. A heat pump takes heat from the air: the Daitsu Multi-Hybrid, for example, declares a SCOP of 3.72 in its official 2024-25 catalogue, about 3.7 kWh of heat for every kWh of electricity over the season.
The thermostat matters as much as the machine: according to IDAE, Spain's energy agency, each extra degree of heating raises consumption by about 7 %. 21 °C is comfortable and 15-17 °C is enough in bedrooms. In a damp house in the Port, keeping a steady temperature uses less than heating in bursts.
Grants
FACTOR 2026 (Balearic Government): 70 % for individuals, counting at most €1,000/kWt (plus €450/kWt if a new distribution system, such as fan coils or underfloor heating, goes in too) and capped at €25,000 per installation. Open until 28 February 2027 or until the budget runs out; it requires a seasonal performance (SPF) above 2.5, doesn't cover air-to-air units in homes and requires domicile in the Balearic Islands, so a second home is usually left out.
Anyone who lives in the Port all year does meet the domicile requirement, whatever their nationality: what counts is where you live, not where you're from.
Pollença's IBI (property tax) rebate is for solar energy, not heat pumps. If you add panels too, see solar panels in Port de Pollença.
We prepare the paperwork and, with your authorisation, file and justify the grant; you sign the application and the grant is paid into your bank account. The authorities decide whether it is awarded.

How we work
We look at what heating you have, whether you live here in winter or only come in summer, and where the outdoor unit can go sheltered from the north.
Heat loads of the house, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1); heat pump, tank and emitters; and legalisation with the Industry department.
If you live here, we file FACTOR 2026 with your authorisation. Servicing: whatever the RITE (IT 3.3) requires or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's.

Common questions
It depends on the house, but the sum starts from one fact: a boiler delivers a little less than the kWh it burns, and a heat pump such as the Daitsu Multi-Hybrid, for example, declares a SCOP of 3.72, about 3.7 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity. In Port de Pollença the usual comparison is with heating oil or butane. And according to IDAE, each degree lower on the thermostat saves about 7 %.
Yes, if your domicile is in the Balearic Islands: FACTOR 2026 requires that of individuals, regardless of nationality (BOIB no. 83 of 2-7-2026). It covers 70 %, counting at most €1,000/kWt, plus €450/kWt with a new distribution system, and capped at €25,000, until 28 February 2027. If the house in Port de Pollença is only a holiday home, you normally won't qualify.
On the façade that doesn't face north and with the clearances in its manual. Daikin, for example, asks that the suction side isn't exposed directly to the wind, recommends a baffle plate and warns that in coastal areas salt shortens the service life. In Port de Pollença, a few metres from the bay, that means shelter, a firm mount and cleaning the coil more often.
Sometimes. A heat pump performs better with low-temperature water, and radiators designed for a boiler may fall short. In a house in Port de Pollença we calculate the heat loads of each room, as the RITE requires (IT 1.2.4.1.1), and see whether the radiators will do, whether any need enlarging or whether it's better to move to fan coils, which also cool in summer.
It exists, but in Mallorca we don't offer it: here, with the humidity, a cold floor gets condensation, so our underfloor heating only heats. In Port de Pollença summer cooling comes from fan coils or ducts, run by the same heat pump. The RITE (IT 1.1.4.1.2) takes 23-25 °C and 45-60 % humidity as summer comfort, and the fan coil helps remove the humidity of the bay.
Whichever is stricter of the RITE and your unit's manufacturer's manual, plus the leak checks of Regulation (EU) 2024/573 (art. 5) if its gas charge brings it under them. In Port de Pollença, with the salt and the wind, the outdoor unit's coil gets dirty sooner, and a dirty unit uses more to give the same heat. We give you the schedule in writing.
Quality
We work with every brand; for example Daikin, Daitsu, Mitsubishi Electric or Panasonic, choosing the unit by its heating efficiency and by what its manual asks for on the coast.
