Sewage treatment plants in Mallorca

Binissalem is a wine village with many country houses on rural land, off the mains. Underneath are two aquifers the Water Plan watches closely: one because of nitrates and the other because it also supplies Palma. We are Joaquín and Juan, installers in Mallorca since 1998: we supply the new treatment plant, install it, do the electrics and prepare and sign the documents for your architect or engineer to file.

Two entries in Annex 9 of the Balearic Water Plan concern Binissalem.
The Penyaflor groundwater body (1809M2), shared with Alaró and Consell, helps supply Palma as well as Binissalem, Alaró, Consell and Lloseta, and is abstracted at 103 %. It is Jurassic limestone and dolomite with Oligocene conglomerates. Where there are public supply wells there are protection perimeters that change the unit (art. 70.10, table 13).
Part of the municipality lies over the Inca body (1811M3), in poor status because of nitrates (66 mg/l) and under vulnerable-zone programmes since 2010. Among others it receives the water from the Binissalem treatment works (0.35 hm³ a year), which the Plan lists as already extended and improved. A house that treats its water well and irrigates its plot helps in the right direction.
In a country house the treated water goes to the green area on the plot itself: 25 m² per population equivalent (art. 70.12). And roof water goes its own way, because the treatment plant may not collect rainwater (art. 70.7.d).

The rules here
The unit must be approved, CE-marked and compliant with the EN 12566 family (art. 70.14), and its manufacturer must certify a minimum performance of BOD₅ 70 %, COD 75 % and suspended solids 70 % (art. 70.10). We work with all brands; as an example, the GRAF one2clean.
Maintenance: the services required by the rules or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's (on the GRAF one2clean, twice a year), with a signed report; and emptying the sludge, by an authorised waste company, as the law requires (art. 70.7.f).
What we do
How we work
With the address we check on the DGRH map whether the house is inside the perimeter of a Penyaflor well, which supplies Binissalem and part of Palma.
We work out the 25 m² per population equivalent the treated water must irrigate and send you in writing the unit, the electrics and the pit for your builder.
We install once the pit is ready, start the plant and hand over the signed documents; your engineer files the responsible declaration with the DGRH.

Common questions
It could. The Penyaflor aquifer, which Binissalem shares with Alaró and Consell, supplies these villages, Lloseta and partly Palma, according to Annex 9 of the Balearic Water Plan (Royal Decree 49/2023). The protection perimeters are shown on the DGRH map: we check them with the location before quoting, because inside the maximum restriction perimeter the unit changes.
The Inca body, under part of the municipality, has 66 mg/l of nitrates and vulnerable-zone programmes since 2010, according to the Water Plan. For your treatment plant it means the treated water goes to a green area on the plot and, if the plot lies in a high-vulnerability zone of the aquifer, the Plan also lists denitrification and disinfection, which table 13 marks as recommended up to 12 population equivalents and table 14 requires above 12 (art. 70.10).
At least 200 m²: the Water Plan requires 25 m² of green area per population equivalent (art. 70.12 of the Balearic Water Plan, Royal Decree 49/2023), and in a home the guideline equivalence is one per bed space (art. 70.8, table 12). Without that land, the options are a drainage trench, with a favourable report and prior authorisation, or a sealed holding tank emptied periodically.
A new extended-aeration treatment plant, approved, CE-marked and compliant with EN 12566 (art. 70.14 of the Water Plan). We work with all brands; as an example, the GRAF one2clean. The model is chosen by the bed spaces, by whether it is a holiday home and by what the area requires.
As the installation company we prepare and sign what your architect or engineer asks for: the declaration that the installation complies with the rules, the manufacturer's data sheets and performance, the maintenance plan and the electrical installation certificate. With that your architect or engineer files the responsible declaration with the DGRH (art. 70.4 of the Balearic Water Plan, Royal Decree 49/2023).
Yes. The responsible declaration to the Directorate-General for Water Resources is always filed, also below 12 population equivalents (art. 70.4 of the Balearic Water Plan, Royal Decree 49/2023). What only exists above 12 is the yearly report of the performance checks and the sludge log (art. 70.11).
