Heat pumps · sa Pobla

Heat pumps in sa Pobla,
built for damp winters.

We are Joaquín and Juan, the two partners behind JSL, a registered RITE thermal installer. Winter in sa Pobla is damp rather than cold, and summer gets muggy: one air-to-water heat pump can heat the house, make your hot water and, with fan coils, cool it too, whether you live in the old town, out among the vegetable fields or in Crestatx. We design it, fit it and certify it ourselves. We don't subcontract anything.

The local climate

Winter in sa Pobla: mild, but very humid

Sa Pobla sits on low, fertile farmland in the north of the island, between the mountains and the Bay of Alcúdia, with the s'Albufera wetland on the edge of the municipality. That flat, wet landscape shapes how winter feels indoors, and so it shapes the heating you need.

The European Commission's typical meteorological year for the town tells the story. February is the coldest month, averaging 8.7 °C, and from December to February the average stays at 11.5 °C: not extreme cold. Humidity is another matter: 80 % on average in November and 89 % in December, and with air that damp the house feels colder than the thermometer says.

Why that suits a heat pump

A heat pump uses the least electricity when the outdoor air is mild, because the gap between the outside air and the water it sends round the house is small. In sa Pobla it spends almost all winter in that comfortable zone. To give one example, the Daitsu Multi-Hybrid is rated to run down to −15 °C in the manufacturer's 2024-25 catalogue, far below anything the plain sees on its coldest night.

And why the damp matters

Cold, damp air feels colder than the thermometer says, and in a house with chilly walls it ends up as dark patches in the corners and behind wardrobes. Keeping the house at a steady temperature, instead of blasting the heating on and off, warms the walls and helps stop that condensation. RITE sets indoor design conditions for winter at 21-23 °C and 40-50 % relative humidity, and that is what we aim for.

Climate data: PVGIS-TMY, European Commission, point 39.770 N · 3.023 E, retrieved 4 October 2026. The local AEMET station is Sa Pobla Sa Canova, 32 m above sea level. Indoor conditions: RITE, IT 1.1.4.1.2.

Your home

From the back yard to the farmhouse: where everything goes

Terraced town house with a yard

Much of the old town is terraced houses with a corral, a walled yard, at the back. That yard is the natural home for the outdoor unit: open air, away from the street and with the façade left untouched. Inside, the question is what emitters you have. Radiators from an old boiler can often stay; if a renovation lifts the floors, underfloor heating runs at low temperature and gets more out of the heat pump. Noise towards the neighbours is limited by the Balearic noise law (Law 1/2007) and the town bylaw.

Farmhouses out on the plain

Mains gas doesn't reach the lanes between the fields, so most farmhouses run on an oil boiler, butane bottles or a wood stove. Here one heat pump does two jobs, heating and hot water, and frees up the room where the oil tank used to be. If the property has an irrigation well with its own pump, we check the electrics and the contracted power before adding the heat pump, so nothing trips when both run at once. A recent bill and a photo of the fuse board are enough.

Crestatx and flats in town

In the residential area of Crestatx, where homes are newer and have gardens, it usually makes sense to plan for summer from day one. In a flat, the outdoor unit goes on the terrace or the roof if the owners' association agrees: Spain's Horizontal Property Act doesn't allow changes to the façade without that consent.

Summer

July's sticky heat, handled by the same unit

Summer on the plain gets hot: in the same PVGIS series, July and August average over 26 °C (26.6 °C in August), and the humidity barely eases. An air-to-water heat pump reverses its cycle and produces chilled water, but that water is not sent through the underfloor pipes. Cooling through the floor exists, but we don’t offer it in Mallorca: with the humidity here, a cold floor condenses. Summer comfort comes from fan coils or ducted units on the same heat pump.

As a fan coil cools, moisture from the air condenses on its coil, so it dehumidifies as well. That is why it has a drip tray and a drain, which has to be properly routed. RITE gives 23-25 °C and 45-60 % humidity as the summer reference, and IDAE recommends 26 °C for cooling: with drier air, 26 °C feels perfectly comfortable.

If you only want cooling in two or three rooms, a split system may suit you better: see air conditioning in sa Pobla.

Hot water

Showers for the whole family, without oil or gas bottles

After heating, hot water is the biggest energy cost in many homes, and it runs all year. A heat pump heats it and stores it in a cylinder. For example, Daitsu's catalogue gives the Multi-Hybrid a COPdhw of 2.74 in a warm climate under EN 16147: about 2.7 kWh of hot water for every kWh of electricity, whereas an electric immersion heater manages one for one at best.

The cylinder is sized by the number of people, not by guesswork. Spain's Building Code (CTE DB-HE, annex F) uses a reference demand of 28 litres per person per day at 60 °C for homes. A farmhouse with three generations under one roof doesn't use water like a flat for two, and the cylinder has to reflect that.

  • Coming from butane: no more swapping bottles or a water heater in the kitchen.
  • Coming from heating oil: the boiler, the tank and the fuel orders all go.
  • Coming from an electric water heater: the same hot water for a lot less electricity.

Savings and grants

Where the savings are, and the FACTOR grant in brief

IDAE's rule of thumb holds in sa Pobla too: every extra degree on the heating adds roughly 7 % to consumption. 19-21 °C is plenty during the day, and 15-17 °C in bedrooms at night. Where winter is damp rather than cold, a house kept at an even temperature beats a thermostat turned up high now and then.

FACTOR 2026: the essentials

  • Run by the Balearic Government, it covers heat pumps with a seasonal performance factor (SPF) above 2.5; for private individuals it pays 70 % of the eligible cost, with caps per kW and per installation.
  • Air-to-air units, i.e. split systems, are not eligible in homes.
  • Applications are open until 28 February 2027, first come first served while funds last, and work started from 1 January 2026 qualifies.
  • Private applicants must be resident in the Balearic Islands.

We prepare the paperwork and, with your authorisation, file and justify the grant; you sign the application and the grant is paid into your bank account. The authorities decide whether it is awarded. More in renewable energy grants 2026.

At the town hall, sa Pobla's bylaws give a 50 % reduction in the building-works tax (ICIO) only on the solar part of a project; there is no relief recorded for heat pumps. If you add panels, see solar panels in sa Pobla.

What people in sa Pobla ask us

Heat pump questions from sa Pobla

I have a farmhouse near sa Pobla with an oil boiler. What changes with a heat pump?

The boiler, the tank and the oil deliveries go, and an air-to-water heat pump provides heating and hot water on electricity. Winters on the sa Pobla plain are mild: February, the coldest month, averages 8.7 °C according to PVGIS-TMY, and mild air is where a heat pump performs best. We size it from your home's heat-load calculation, as RITE requires.

My town house gets damp in winter. Will a heat pump fix it?

It helps: a steady temperature warms the walls and cuts condensation, and sa Pobla needs it, with average relative humidity of 89 % in December (PVGIS-TMY). If damp is rising from the ground through the walls, that is a building job and no heating system will cure it. To bring in fresh air without losing heat, look at heat-recovery ventilation.

Can the same system cool the house in summer?

Yes, through fan coils or ducted units connected to the same heat pump. Underfloor heating is kept for heating only. Cooling through the floor exists, but we don’t offer it in Mallorca: with the humidity here, and more so next to s'Albufera, a cold floor condenses. A fan coil also takes moisture out of the air while it cools, which is why it needs a drain; RITE's summer reference is 23-25 °C at 45-60 % humidity.

I live in the old town. Where does the outdoor unit go?

Usually in the back yard or patio: well ventilated, away from the street and without touching the façade. We keep it away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours', because noise is limited by Balearic Law 1/2007 and the town bylaw. In a flat, it goes on the terrace or roof with the owners' association's consent.

How big a hot-water cylinder does a family need?

It depends on how many of you there are. The CTE (DB-HE, annex F) uses 28 litres per person per day at 60 °C as the reference for homes; we size the cylinder from that and from your habits. A sa Pobla farmhouse with grandparents, parents and children needs a lot more than a flat for two.

Are there grants for heat pumps in sa Pobla?

The Balearic FACTOR 2026 grant: heat pumps with an SPF above 2.5, no split systems in homes, applications until 28 February 2027 on a first-come basis, and residence in the Balearics required. At sa Pobla town hall, the 50 % ICIO reduction applies to the solar part of the works, and property tax (IBI) has no energy discount (BOIB no. 144 of 2025).

What maintenance and warranty come with a heat pump?

The inspections RITE requires or, if the manufacturer asks for more, the manufacturer's, in sa Pobla as anywhere in Mallorca. You get the installation certified with Industry by a RITE thermal installer, the 3-year statutory guarantee and the manufacturer's warranty on the unit.
