Solar panels in Sa Pobla, where no mountain blocks the sun.

We are Joaquín and Juan, the two partners behind JSL Mallorca. On the Sa Pobla plain the sun rises and sets unobstructed, and almost everyone has something that runs during the day: a well, a cold room, an air conditioner. We install and register self-consumption systems as an authorised low-voltage electrical installer, in the village, in Crestatx and on farms across the municipality.

What Sa Pobla has going for it

A plain with no ridge in the way

Wedged between the Tramuntana range and s'Albufera, the municipality of Sa Pobla is mostly flat farmland. For solar, that is worth money. The terrain-based horizon in PVGIS never rises above 5º, and only towards the north-west, where the sun sets on summer evenings. To the east, south and south-west, the path of the winter sun, it stays below 2º.

Under that sky, one kWp facing due south at 35º (the optimum angle PVGIS gives for the town) yields 1,551 kWh a year. Not every roof in Sa Pobla faces south at that pitch, though, and the difference can be worked out before a single bracket goes up:

  • South-facing pitched roof at 35º: 1,551 kWh per kWp a year; 162 in July, 95 in December.
  • Flat roof, panels facing south at just 10º: 1,433 kWh, 92% of the above, on a low frame that catches little wind.
  • East-west gable at 15º: around 1,300 kWh, or 84%; in June and July it actually edges ahead of the south-facing roof, while in December it delivers half.

That is why we never quote an island-wide average: we start from your roof's orientation and pitch, and from the hours when you actually use power.

Figures from PVGIS, European Commission (PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005-2023, 14% system losses), retrieved on 9 October 2026 for central Sa Pobla.

Daytime water, daytime sun

Irrigation wells: the perfect match

Sa Pobla's market gardens have a name beyond the island: the Balearic tourism strategy agency notes that the first shiploads of potatoes left for England in 1924 (illesbalears.travel). Behind those fields are wells, and an irrigation pump runs precisely when the sun is strongest: by day, through the long months.

For summer watering, tilt the panels less

PVGIS says something here that goes against the habit of propping panels up steeply. Facing south at only 15º, each kWp produces 498 kWh from June to August; at 35º, 470. That is 6% more right in the irrigation season. If the array mainly serves the pump, flatter is better; if it also has to help the house in winter, we look for the middle ground.

Direct solar pumping or a well on the main system

  • Direct solar pumping: the panels drive the pump through a variable-speed drive that matches the flow to the sun at any moment. Off-grid, it is a stand-alone system under ITC-BT-40 of Spain's low-voltage regulations.
  • Well connected to a self-consumption system: one installation supplies the pump, the house or the warehouse, and any surplus can be offset on your bill.

Because we also fit and repair pumps, we look at the whole well: depth, flow, watering hours and motor rating. There is more on our irrigation pumps in Mallorca page.

Every roof, its own approach

Flat roofs, tiles, metal sheds and farmhouses

The flat roof of a village house

Flat roofs are common in the old town. Panels go on a ballasted frame, with no holes through the membrane, and at a shallow angle so the wind sweeping across the plain has little to grab. As you have seen, 10º costs very little output.

Traditional tiled roofs

On Mediterranean clay tiles we use hooks that slip under the tile without breaking it, and the cable runs inside down to the inverter. What we check first is the roof slope itself: which side gets the sun, and whether a chimney or the house next door shades it at certain hours.

Farm sheds and agricultural warehouses

Cold stores, grading machines and forklift chargers draw power during working hours, exactly while the panels produce, so nearly all the energy is used on the spot and a battery is often unnecessary. On metal roofs we use fixings designed for sandwich or trapezoidal sheet, and we check the building's switchboard beforehand.

Farmhouses and Crestatx

Out in the country there is usually room to choose: the sunniest roof face, a pergola or a ground-mounted frame. These homes come alive in the evening, so the battery is what carries midday production through to dinner. And air conditioning or a heat pump runs nicely in step with the sunshine.

Keeping the output up

Field dust and the air off s'Albufera

Part of the s'Albufera nature park lies within the municipality, bringing damp air and plenty of birds, while ploughed fields send up dust. Both end up on the glass, and a dirty module produces less. Cleaning is not a hose-down at noon: it follows the panel maker's instructions. The LONGi operation and maintenance manual, for example, says to:

  • clean early in the morning, at dusk or on an overcast day, when irradiance is low;
  • keep the water within 10 ºC of the module temperature, at no more than 0.7 MPa;
  • avoid abrasive products, and preferably not use mineral-heavy water, which leaves marks;
  • treat bird droppings and dust stuck on by humidity as reasons to clean, with frequency set by how dirty the panels actually look.

Inspections work the same way: whatever the regulations require or, if your equipment manufacturer asks for more, what the manufacturer specifies. Near a wetland it also pays to check the bolts and clamps, the first parts to suffer.

All above board

Industry, the town hall and grants

A grid-connected system is registered as self-consumption under Royal Decree 244/2019, with the electrical installation certificate we sign as an authorised low-voltage installer. If you want your surplus offset on the bill, the simplified compensation scheme covers systems of up to 100 kW.

Sa Pobla town hall knocks half off the ICIO, the local construction tax, on the solar part of the budget (tax bylaw published in BOIB no. 17, 6 February 2025). It has to be applied for; it is not automatic.

  • FOTOPAR: the 2026 call closed on 30 April 2026. The next one opens on 26 January 2027 and runs to 30 April, or until the money runs out: €600/kWp for systems up to 5 kWp and €420/kWh for batteries (BOIB no. 171 of 2025). Key point: you apply before work starts.
  • Income tax: if the system is completed and paid for in 2026, with its electrical certificate, additional provision 62 of Spain's IRPF law allows a 10% deduction, capped at €500. You claim it in your own Spanish tax return; we hand over the invoices and certificates.

You sign the FOTOPAR application and the money goes into your account; we prepare the documents and, if you authorise us, file and justify them. The authorities decide on the award, and Balearic government grants require residence in the Balearic Islands. Everything else is on our solar grants page and in the guide to solar panels in Mallorca.

What people in Sa Pobla ask us

Solar panels in Sa Pobla: your questions

Do the Tramuntana mountains take sun away from panels in Sa Pobla?

Hardly at all. The terrain horizon calculated by PVGIS peaks at 5º towards the north-west, where the sun only sets in summer; to the south it stays under 2º. That is why one kWp facing south at 35º yields 1,551 kWh a year in central Sa Pobla. Nearby shade from chimneys, trees or neighbouring houses is checked separately, from photos or on site.

I have a flat roof. Do the panels need to be tilted up steeply?

No. In Sa Pobla, with panels facing south at just 10º, each kWp produces 1,433 kWh a year according to PVGIS, 92% of what it would give at 35º. In return the frame catches less wind and is held down by ballast, without piercing the waterproofing.

My roof faces east and west. Is it still worth it?

Yes, with caveats. At a 15º pitch, an east-west roof in Sa Pobla yields about 1,300 kWh per kWp a year (PVGIS), 84% of a south-facing one. In June and July it slightly outperforms the south-facing roof and spreads output across morning and afternoon; in December it drops to half.

Can solar panels run the pump on my irrigation well?

Yes, and few uses suit solar so well, because the pump works by day and in summer. It can run directly off the panels through a solar pump drive (a stand-alone system under ITC-BT-40) or be part of a self-consumption system. For summer watering a shallow tilt helps: at 15º, PVGIS gives 6% more in Sa Pobla from June to August than at 35º.

I live near s'Albufera. How often should the panels be cleaned?

When dirt is visible, not by calendar: that is how the LONGi maintenance manual, for example, puts it. It asks for cleaning early in the morning or at dusk, with water within 10 ºC of the module, no abrasives and at most 0.7 MPa of pressure. In Sa Pobla, next to the wetland, bird droppings and dust stuck on by humidity are the main culprits.

What rebate does Sa Pobla town hall give for solar panels?

The ICIO one: Sa Pobla town hall takes 50% off the tax on the solar part of the budget, under the bylaw published in BOIB no. 17 of 6 February 2025. It has to be requested, and we prepare the technical documents that go with it.

What support is there if I install now, or if I wait until 2027?

For a home in Sa Pobla finished and paid for in 2026, there is the 10% income-tax deduction, up to €500 (additional provision 62). FOTOPAR 2026 closed on 30 April 2026; the 2027 call opens on 26 January and runs to 30 April 2027 or until funds run out, with €600/kWp up to 5 kWp and €420/kWh for batteries, and you must apply before work begins.

I own a house in Crestatx but live in the UK. Can I get the grants?

Balearic government grants require individual applicants to be resident in the Balearic Islands, so with a holiday home you may not qualify; and the IRPF deduction is for people who file a Spanish income-tax return. We check this with you before counting on a single euro. We speak English, Spanish and German, and reply within 24-48 hours on working days.
